Dried Uncolonized Cakes
    #9980501 - 03/16/09 07:06 AM (15 years, 6 days ago)

ok so a few weeks ago i pre-sterilized some BRF cakes via gladd tek and stored em in the fridge.... and now they are dry as rocks, so i was wondering what the best way to re-hydrate cakes.  im thinking scrape off the dry verm layer and then just pouring an excess of water in and letting it sit for a few and then drain add the dry verm and re-sterilize?

How do you know they are dry? Did you take them out of the jars?

They might 'look dry', but could be fine. However, if you're sure they've dried out, there's really no way you could get the moisture content right on those things. I would suggest dumping the jars and starting over - a bag of brown rice is a couple of bucks and hopefully you have a blender. A bag of vermiculite will run you $5 to $10. That's not enough cash, to me, to justify inoculating and wasting 2 weeks waiting for colonization that won't even happen.

Look up 'field capacity' and make sure your substrate is at that level before tossing it in jars.

cool i think i'll knock a couple to see if my moisture perception is off and go from there... btw i used large containers with like 9 tiny holes would this cause evaporation?
