Never read it, but I wouldn't want a book that only helps me to identify 188 species. Go with National Audubon Society's Field Guide to Mushrooms.

that book sucks, go with audubon's or mushrooms demystified, or both.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I would have to reccomend mushrooms demystified by david arora. hundreds (thousands) of keys to figure out what you got.

Course it doesn't have all the psilocybes...

If you want a book for psilocybin containing mushrooms buy the one by statments.

I have a copy of a later edition he did with his daughter. It's an OK book, but if you want to hunt psychedelics it won't help you much.

If you live anywhere near Pennsylvania I would recommend Mushrooms of Northeastern North America by Alan E Bessette, Arleen R Bessette, and David W Fischer. It has excellent keys and descriptions and will teach you more than most books about how to identify. It also has over 600 color illustrations.

Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora is also excellent, but its focus is on the West Coast, so it has a lot of things you'll never see and doesn't mention some things you will. On an overall basis, it's the best book out there right now.

Neither of these is particularly great for hunting psychedelic mushrooms. If that's your interest, try one of the guides specifically on that topic. Check the books section on the Shroomery, there are many good ones out there.

Happy Mushrooming!

  Toxicman

I just purchased Mushrooms Demystified about a week ago....very comprehensive and informal.....it's turing into a nightly read   But I was wondering.....could you recommend any books that would specialize in the Washington State or greater Pacific Northwest region?  Mushrooms Demystified seems to cover Washington some, but since the focus is primarily CA, this leads me to believe that maybe there are some WA species that weren't given enough (if any) attention.  I'm looking for anything pertaining to this area, or a good book that deals primarily with psychedelic mushrooms.  Thanks!!

As far as I know, Mushrooms Demystified is currently the best overall mushroom book for that area. The mushrooms of Washington shouldn't be too different from those in California. MD is the best guide around for Colorado, and we're farther away and have a couple mountain ranges and a desert in the way.

There are guides to specific groups of mushrooms which provide better coverage on those groups. If you have an interest in a specific group of mushrooms I would recommend you get a book on that group for more detailed study.

Sorry I can't be of more help than that.

Happy mushrooming!
