I think it can be just as much a challage. Outside you have to prevent insects and other critters from destorying your patch, and it needs to be watered.

Is there more or less risk of contams outdoors?

Same risk. You still have to start some substrate indoors, the chances of contam remain the same.

You do not have to start it inside although it is much easier.

I have taken a syringe and dropped a few drops on some left over rye I had from doing my jars. Wallah had some myc but slugs ate all of it.

You also probably need to live somewhere with the appropriate climate and start the shroom bed at the right time of year.

There's no "contams" per se, outdoors.  With an outdoor grow, your mushrooms have to be able to coexist with the millions of other bacteria, fungi, molds that are out there to begin with.  With an indoor grow it's different cuz you're providing a sterile environment with the hopes of ONLY growing your mushrooms, and keeping everything else out.

And as far as "difficulty" is concerned, I'm not sure - but it's a completely different ballgame.  With an indoor grow, you KNOW when you're going to be colonizing and fruiting - with an outdoor grow, I don't think you can really plan the timeline as freely, it's pretty much in nature's hands for the most part.

Just do as alot of people here do. When your substrate is finito just toss it outside and let it flourish once again in mother natures care!

Outdoors you have the bonus of outdoor ozone which will keep contamns from taking over however you also are relying on conditions to be right for fruiting unless you make a cover. I plan on doing anoher outdoor bed cuz the last one got hit by slugs and slugs kill shrooms aparrently...I would say outdoor should be a tad easier in regards to contamns but a lil harder to fruit, whereas indoors everything is rgulated. Either way it is going to take effort on your part.

using spent projects for an outdoor 2nd chance is a great idea though.

I'd just like to add that the HUGE advantage of growing outdoors that seems to get overlooked until THIS HAPPENS

...needless to say; is that you don't have a house full of a schedule one! ...with your intent being to sell AND DELIVER! (they take your car) ...oh trust me buddy, All that "They're for personal use" shit don't fly...THEY TELL YOU WHAT YOUR INTENT IS! (just so ya know)

...just something to think about when deciding:shrug: take it for what its worth! :goodluck:
