Things aren't supposed to be this way!
    #9975527 - 03/15/09 10:17 AM (15 years, 17 days ago)

I hear this statement all the time. It makes no sense to a well-balanced, non-neurotic individual (if only we could find one!) Things either ARE or ARE not. :yoda:

There is no third alternative. (Please, for once, just once, no quantum physics in this thread. TIA)

THIS HAS BEEN A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Now, back to your regularly-scheduled boondoggle.

I admit I went and looked up boondoggle. Excellent word.

Anyhow for an on topic response, I think people feel that with the tools we have at hand now, and the degrees of understanding we have, we could have set up a world for ourselves which is better than what we have now. I think it's kind of a flawed thought, as we didn't initially start with and of this "understanding" and thus we couldn't coherently build a perfect (or at least better) world from the onset.

We've got what we've got, maybe instead of viewing it as "things aren't supposed to be this way", we can look at it as "things don't have to be this way anymore".

Shakyamuni Buddha asked his disciples if it is ever beneficial to harbor an anxious or worried thought.  What do you think?

--------------------
“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

well, initially worry can be helpful as it might lead one to confronting that worry, preparing for what they fear, etc. Howevr, if one is anxious or worried and is doing nothing to address the said feeling, then I don't think it's particularly beneficial.

If a blatantly illegal practice is carried out in public with the consent of government, couldn't we say that things aren't supposed to be that way?  What are laws if not declarations of the way things are supposed to be?

Reality is composed of intentions as well as events, and when events don't correspond to intentions, then we can correctly say that it isn't supposed to be that way.

Good idea/thread.  Reminds me of Robert "Looking Out for #1" Ringer:

Quote:

After years of experience, Robert Ringer is convinced that aligning oneself with reality is the shortest path to unlimited development, growth, financial success, and high-level achievement in all areas of life.

Which is why he writes about the way things really are rather than the way some people would like them to be. He is adamant in his belief that the quickest way to get from where you are now to where you want to be in life is to base your actions on an accurate perception of reality.

http://www.robertringer.com/

Reality is what it is.  Those that rail against it often have a difficult time in life.  Ringer's a millionaire several times over.  Too bad you didn't publish first.

I could not disagree more. It's human nature at play. Because someone in power or at the top is a sociopath that does not make me cheat on my wife or steal or the millions of unhealthy actions humans do.

IMO this rates as one of the dumber things Gandhi said.:satansmoking:  "few drops":rofl2: Course he lived before seeing exactly how dirty and polluted we can make that ol ocean.

IMO humanity in general is a wasteland.

Both are good qualities to have.  Although too much optimism reminds me of all of the overly happy mormon people i know, and too much realisticism? is that buzzkill to have around telling me how pointless life is and such.

How can one find being realistic a negative?

An optimistic can turn this uncomfortable reality into a reality that may give that person hope.  Or look on the bright side.

Ringer also said he remained optimistic by expecting a negative result.  That way when things actually turned out ok, he was pleasantly surprised.

I adopted that philosophy 20 years ago and it hasn't failed me yet.  Most things turn out like shit.  It's great when they don't.

Also not to be confused with the study of Japanese soybeans in the pod, edamamology.

I find it a most worthy and unusual trait in humans. Few have anywhere near enough of it IMO.

I agree.

However, sometimes people go out of their way to be cynical and negative about things... then justify their pessimism by saying "I'm just being realistic."

But you're talking about something completely different.

Am I? An optimist will look towards the future and work towards goals that a realist would deem impossible. An optimist, at least in my view of the word, will be hopeful that things will turn out better than planned and act accordingly.

In this way I see being realistic a negative... when the mother tells the child "No you can't be a rock star, be realistic."

Bullshit.

Any person thinking in the above way is not being logical.

And being an optimist can take you to your doom as easily as a pessimist. The logical person always has the best chance for success. If they think it's logical to be optimistic in certain situations to achieve a goal they will do it. Kind of reminds me of the Chaos Magicians and their tactics.

Well if it's logical to be pessimistic then optimism in that case would likely lead to disaster. Logic rules and without it, everything else drools.
