Planting a San Pedro cutting

I just received this cutting from a member in a trade. It is much bigger than I expected. The member included a soil mix with the cactus.
Here is Tony, my first ever cactus:
I have a few questions about planting a cutting :
1)How deep in the soil should I plant him?
2)Should I water the soil when I plant him?
3)Is there anything I should do to the area where he was cut?
He will be sitting in my southern most window, receiving warmth from our wood burning fireplace and getting what sun he can until the summer months warm us up.
Update 3/9/09
I planted Tony about two days ago. Here is what he looked like prior to planting
He has not really shown much growth, it's been almost a month since I first received him.
Are these roots enough to sustain his life?
What are some things to watch for if he isn't going to make it and I need to turn him to tea?
Thanks

I'd say keep him dry for the next three-four weeks. So, he will send out roots...

deep enough so it doesn't fall over. 3" or 4" is the norm.

definitely not, it has no roots, what can it do with water? you need to be positive that it has rooted before you water it or it will just rot.

just leave it alone, it will form a corky callous on the surface. it needs a bit longer as felix said.

Alright, thanks everyone.
So, from what I've gathered. I should let it sit out in the open until it starts to grow roots. Then I will plant it in a clay pot.

you could put it into dry soil to root, but i find it's easier to just stick it in a pot without soil until it starts to throw roots. just make sure it is orientated correctly.

When you do plant it, get it right the first time man. Replanting cactuses as they get older is fuckin tough and time consuming.

and painful, when you poke around in the soil and get a subterranean spine under the finger nail it fucking hurts!
back to the original point: i find that if i put a cutting into soil, the temptation to give water (even though i know i shouldn't) gets the better of me lol that is why i always recommend to cacti n00bs to leave them out of soil until they are positive that there is some root development
if you put a cutting into soil that hasn't even developed root buds you will certainly have to unpot it at least once to check the rooting progress.

Personally I would go ahead and pot it and wait another month before I watered it.

I have a cutting that's been sitting upright in a cardboard box for around a month and a half, and although it's very very firmly calloused, there's no sign of any root buds. A couple of big bumps are forming (slowly, for the last few weeks) that look promising though.
do you think it's just dormant?

Yeah, it's dormant. In my experience you dont want it breaking dormancy with roots before its in soil... when a cuttings dormant, it can last pretty obnoxiously long. I knew a guy who kept some cuttings in a drawer for almost 10 months.. I'm positive they would've lasted atleast a year to 15 months.

Well, you could always just not water it for a while, and after several weeks of being in the soil, it's either rooted or dead to me.

hey doc and gang
my new pedro cuttings have caloused pretty well, but its been SO damn damp lately, theyre starting to mold...
any suggestions? tomorrow ill move them to a higher shelf, but thats all i can think to do.
aside from making a new cut and PRAYING that it doesnt mold the same...
maybe make fresh cuts and wrap about 20 layers of newpaper around it???

if you wrap it in anything you are inviting mold/rot. by the by, is it actually MOLD or rot? to stop mold (i doubt it is mold, but ya never know) put it in the sun and keep it out of rain (even super high humidity it should not mold if its clean and has good air flow in bright conditions).
if it's rot, recut above the rot and use sulfur and keep it as dry as possible and *not* dark.
