Considering RR's comments, I'll never stray from using peat again.

For people who like the ready-to-use convenience of MGMC, I wonder if a non-pasturized 50/50+ type mix would outperform MGMC.

Has anyone out there used a peat based casing without any heat treament?

Yes, and it works but there's a higher chance of contam, cobweb is pretty common in my experience. Easy to get rid of too. I've done it when in a hurry or not overly concerned with the results.

If a person wants to cut corners, I guess one option would be to heat treat the peat - and then make your 50/50+ casing.
One PC load of peat would go a lot futher than cooking 50/50+.

Anyway, before I let this thread die . . .
If you want to case, and don't want the hassle of making 50/50+, then use VERMICULITE!
MGMC is crap.
You can get one flush out of it, and if you are lucky, two.

I'm swiching to no casing.
I've had some success fruiting coir with no casing and am stumped why I have not jumped OFF the casing bandwagon.

I guess some habits die hard.

PS
I know this is common knowledge around here, but coir fruits lightning fast when you use light during bulk colonization.

Well, like I said earlier, it's the only thing I could get locally during the winter. No peat, no verm, nothing. Just a couple potting soil mixes like mgmc.
