Green specs, 20hrs after innoc..
    #996417 - 10/27/02 08:41 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Less than 20hrs ago I innoculated my 10 jars with a B+ syringe.
I have been keeping temps around 85F and noticed tiny green specs in all jars, at all 4 points of innoculation, where the needle touched. So if it is a contaminant, im sure it was introduced during innoc', so my question is should i chuck the jars and start over or wait to see what develops. I can't see how i got contams...I covered jars with alum foil while sterilzing for 1hour in a pot with lid. I used no tape over the holes, until after inoculation. And before every innoculation of each jar i burned the needle with an alcho flame and wiped the needle with alcho. I'm thinking maybe some mold spores landed on the needle tip or something.
Is there a chance the mycellium can overpower the contam?

just wait a week. green mold should start out white anyway, so its probably just the color of some of the verm specks or your eyes playing tricks.

That could be, but all jars have the green specs, around the same areas. How can Verm be green?

It may be contams coming in through the jar lid, or holes. The holes are all taped with electrical tape (black tape), and were taped after inocculation. Also the lids are upside down. Maybe the seal is not tight enough.

thanks man, but there are to many factors that seem to fall into place.

You shouldnt even be looking at your jars 20hrs after inoculation.
Incubate in complete darkness. Dont even look for at least five days.

I couldnt help but look. Plus i have to look to check on there temp. I have the jars sitting in a box on top of my oil heater. I have the temp maintained between 80-90F

The contam appears in all the jars like this.

How can Verm be green?

Vermiculte tends to look different colors when light hits it... similiar to oil on the surface of water.  Keep an eye on the green spots... if they grow, you have contamination... if they don't then you are probably safe.  Try not to handle the jars too much... the first time is hard
