i have done some and are yet plenty more to come for me in cultivation. there is a question though that really puzzles me. but its difficult to explain it with my poor english, so for a few weeks i kept it inside - i will try now
a pf cake is a mycelium network, right? that means that if u cut it in half, you can have both pieces fruiting. so size of the mycelium is not such important to its living as it is e.g. for plants or animals. BUT if i cut a small piece (1x1x1 cm) of mycelium and case it, i dont think it will fruit. are there any fruiting parts of the mycelium? how is it decided where to fruit and where not? i hope you get the point of my question, is somehow about asking how small can a mycelium network be to manage it thru fruiting?
thanx for reading

hrmm interesting question! i think that the mycellium only grows fruits when the network is large enough to support them? i dunno that's mostly just a guess, maybe someone else has a better answer

Well, a casing layer supplies no nutrients, so any fruit that you grow off of a tiny piece of a cake in casing will only have the nutrients of that tiny piece of cake. A casing layer is only to supply moisture, cover and protect the exposed network.
However, you could theoretically use a tiny piece to spawn something else, like poo, but the less substrate you use, the longer colonization time, and the more chance of contams

why is it that casing produces more fruit than cakes? Theoretically they receive the same amount of water and nutrients.. The casing layer just provides more area for the mycelium to colonize.. but not any additional nutrients or h2o.. this confuses me.

The more area colonized by the mycelium, the larger % of shrooms per square inch you get. As the mycelium colonizes more, its potential to produce shrooms increases. They seem to produce more shrooms when the mycelium is larger. Sorta like a tree... in a small pot, it will stay small and not produce many branches and leaves, but in a giant pot, the roots will be able to grow larger therefore the tree will get larger and produce a lot more growth...

btw, noone answered my question.
can i rephrase it?
does the size of the mycelium has to do with the fruiting? apart from birthing conditions, mycelium can produce shrooms even on petris or as the good-old-method says, you incubate till you see pins or primordia...
