Being shot over pot is just ridiculous. As soon as the gun goes off the law has become more dangerous than the pot! From what it sounds like, this shooting is going to upset a lot of people and alienate them from the police.

You'd think the mayor of a town getting raided for no reason and having his dogs shot would've woken the press up, but after an initial hoopla, it's died down without a peep. Maybe this'll get more coverage and bring attention to the whole subculture of paramilitary drug-raids-gone-deeply-wrong.

Also, couldn't help but chuckle at: "...or why a deputy shot and wounded an unarmed Copp."

Derek Copp was covering his eyes from police flashlight when he was shot
March 13, 2009 - mlive.com

GRAND RAPIDS -- The family of a Grand Valley State University student shot by police said he did nothing to provoke gunfire in a drug raid at the student's off-campus apartment.

"All he had time to do was cover his face from a flashlight in his eyes, and they shot him," George Copp said today.

His son, Derek Copp, 20, was shot in the upper chest Wednesday night by an Ottawa County sheriff's deputy, who is assigned to the West Michigan Enforcement Team, a three-county drug unit. Copp is recovering at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus.

He was originally listed in serious condition, but his family has requested the hospital not release information.

George Copp said police have not provided an explanation for the shooting.

"We haven't heard anything."

He declined further comment because "I don't want to say anything that might hurt my son."

WOOD-TV also interviewed Derek Copp's parents, Sheryl and George Copp of Spring Arbor.

Highlights of their interview include:

• Derek told his parents he had lifted his right arm to cover his eyes from a bright flashlight when the shot was fired. He says he did not know it was police knocking on his door Wednesday night when he was home studying with his roommate before the shooting.

• Doctors plan to remove the bullet from Derek's chest today. It entered the right side of his upper chest, broke ribs, ruptured his right lung and went through his liver, his parents said.

• "From what I understand, half the kids in the school may smoke pot," George Copp told WOOD-TV. "And he does, he may, too, but he's not a drug dealer. He's a good kid, and he shouldn't have been shot for that."

• Copp's parents said they didn't learn about the shooting until just before 3 a.m. Thursday -- six hours after the drug raid. They said a nurse and their son called from the hospital. Copp told his parents he gave police their home number and cell phone numbers.

The guy is a stoner and no threat to anyone. From what I hear, he sold to an undercover cop (weed). That same cop could of easily entered his apartment, made sure it was secure and then peacefully arrested him.
At the time of the shooting, there was less than a 1/4 oz. of weed in his apartment.

yeah.. not quite. I live next to GVSU.Neither Ottawa county or Allendale is dry. There are a couple bars here in town and a few party stores. No 24 hr party stores.Peppino's is open late.(restaurant)Meijer's (store) is open 24hr. and about 7 minutes away from GVSU. Most people here are Christian Reform. GVSU has their own police force. I live close enough to have heard the gun shot.

Kudos to mlive.com for continuing to follow the story and updates ...

'Few tablespoons' of pot found in Derek Copp's off-campus apartment, lawyer says
March 17, 2009 - mlive.com

GRAND RAPIDS -- Police found only "tablespoons" of marijuana in Grand Valley State University student Derek Copp's off-campus apartment the night he was shot by police during a drug raid, his lawyer said this afternoon.

"To my knowledge, the raid resulted in the seizure of a few tablespoonfuls of marijuana, and nothing more," attorney Fred Dilley said in a statement.

He said his concern is the manner of the search carried about by the West Michigan Enforcement Team, or WEMET, on Wednesday night. Copp was shot in the chest, and is recovering after suffered injuries to his ribs, lung and liver.

Dilley is also concerned about "the apparent lack of justification whatsoever for the use of force much less deadly force in executing a search warrant. The campus and Allendale communities are asking why? Why burst into a college student's apartment with a gun drawn for a few tablespoonfuls of pot."

From one of the links Veggie posted the media interview with the police said that it was a "narcotics" investigation that lead to the search warrant.  Did they expect him to have hard drugs there?  I hope he recovers soon and gives full details of the event and/or posts them on his facebook page.
I thought of doing film school at my university focusing somewhat on psychedelics like what he's doing so this bothers me quite a bit.  Something like this can't be justified with coke or heroin either but thats where massive drug reform needs to take place so you don't get people who use psychedelics and pot treated like people in the crack/meth houses where sometimes there might actually be an element of danger.
I absolutely hate the ignorance.

Law Enforcement use "narcotics" for everything, from weed to lsd to what a narcotic actually is... heroin, cocaine, etc.

They raid a kids house, who bought a quarter for $35. Then sold you 1/8th for $25.. so they got pissed n shot him. Cause they got ripped off. They just didnt have the balls to raid the evidence room.

Why r you raiding peoples homes or apartments over marijuana?

We're still waisting our money.... on harmless shit. Marijuana does as much to as chugging a bottle of syrup does. Sugar high or THC high its the same.

GO ARREST crack dealers, you fucking pieces of shit.

GVSU student shot during raid out of hospital

GRAND RAPIDS - A Grand Valley State University student shot during a police drug raid at his off-campus apartment in Allendale is out of a Grand Rapids hospital.

George Copp, the father of 20-year student Derek Copp, tells The Grand Rapids Press today his son has been released from Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital.

Family attorney Fred Dilley tells WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids that Derek Copp is resting at the family's home in Spring Arbor, near Jackson.

Copp was unarmed when a bullet penetrated his chest, lungs and liver in the March 11 raid.

Michigan State Police are investigating. They say an Ottawa County sheriff's deputy shot him during the execution of a search warrant.

The shooting has spurred student protests.

ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP -- Friends of Derek Copp cannot comprehend how he
would pose a threat during a police raid of his Campus View apartment
late Wednesday, or why a deputy shot and wounded an unarmed Copp.

"Nobody wants to think those in the criminal justice system are shooting
unarmed college students," said Laura Quist, a 19-year-old Grand Valley
State University sophomore who lives in an opposite hallway from Copp, 20.

Friends described Copp as an easygoing, guitar-playing young man.

Students today continue to question what happened after five officers
with the West Michigan Enforcement Team, a regional drug unit, executed
a drug-related search warrant on Copp's apartment. Copp, a film and
video major, was shot in the upper right chest area with a Glock handgun
after police came through a back glass slider door.

Copp was listed in serious condition at Spectrum Health Butterworth
Hospital.

Police on Thursday said there was no confrontation and did not think
Copp was trying to flee, but did not divulge details about what led to
the shooting.

A student neighbor of Copp, Joe Putra, said he could sometimes smell
marijuana odors in the hallway and often witnessed people coming and
going from Copp's apartment. But he was surprised by the raid.

"This must have been something more serious than just some weed," Putra
said. "He wasn't a real shady kid. It wasn't like he was trying to hide
anything."

The unidentified deputy who fired the shot, a 12-year Ottawa County
sheriff's veteran with a good record, is on paid leave pending a
Michigan State Police investigation. He was assigned to WEMET two years
ago.

State police Lt. Cam Henke would not disclose whether police found drugs
in Copp's apartment or what kind of drug they were seeking. The search
warrant was for an "ongoing narcotics investigation."

He said drug raids at GVSU happen occasionally.

David Bearss, a friend of Copp, questions why police knocked on his rear
sliding door instead of going to the front door. Apartments at the
complex are accessible 24 hours a day.

He calls Copp one of the happiest, friendliest guys he knows and
suggested police did not properly identify themselves.

"If they said it was the police, Derek wouldn't have done anything
different and I can't imagine he did anything to justify getting shot,"
Bearss said. "These guys have all this weapons training to control their
guns and it doesn't seem like any of it was used here."

Authorities would not say whether anyone else was in the apartment.
Bearss knew nothing of Copp being involved with drugs. Another friend of
Copp, Dan Fischer, accused police of overreacting.

"Maybe he stood up too fast, I don't know. But I don't think they should
be shooting first and asking questions later," he said.

Fischer was not sure of any drug use.

"If anything, he had some weed in there. I'm pretty sure he wasn't
growing it," he said.

The owner of Campus View Apartments, Brian Gardner, called the shooting
an isolated incident and said staff makes a point of knowing the
tenants. The 372-unit complex, just off campus, is home to the
university's more studious students and tenants are required to sign a
"no party" agreement, he said.

Gardner said he would have investigated Copp's unit himself, and
probably evicted him, if other tenants had notified him of their drug
suspicions. Still, he described the tenants of the raided apartment as
"nice kids."

"It just seems like there could have been a less tragic outcome," he said.

Copp, a Spring Arbor native, has been at GVSU since 2007, the same year
he graduated from Jackson Community College, according to his Facebook
page.

He identifies himself as "a left-wing hippie peace-keeping liberal."
Copp plays the guitar and often volunteers at music festivals to see
favorite bands for free, his social networking page states.

Music and film are prime influences in his life, listing jambands Phish,
Grateful Dead and Umphrey's McGee as his favorites.

Copp expects to graduate from Grand Valley in 2011. He has held several
jobs including selling college gear at football games and making pizzas
at Peppino's Ristorante Pizzeria and Sports Bar.

Peppino's co-owner Carlo Dileonardo described Copp as a good kid and
said the shooting upset workers at the Allendale eatery.

"Everyone's surprised because we've never seen him out of line or
anything other than being a hard worker," Dileonardo said. "It's shocking.

Students at GVSU, Michigan, Michigan State march to demand changes to drug policies after shooting
March 20, 2009 - mlive.com

GRAND RAPIDS -- The recent shooting of a Grand Valley State University student in a drug raid sparked not only campus outrage in a downtown march Friday, but demands for an end to the war on drugs.

"Your body belongs to you, and just you, and as long as you're not hurting anybody, your body is yours to do what you choose," said Sara Jones, 18, who spoke at Rosa Parks Circle.

She said the March 11 shooting of Derek Copp, 20, who was recently released from the hospital, served as a rallying cry for those who favor legalized marijuana. It also raised concerns among some about the cost of waging the war on drugs. She and others students criticized the tactics used by the West Michigan Enforcement Team, as well as other local drug units that serve search warrants.

"What threat was posed?" Jones asked.

Copp, who was unarmed, was shot in the chest in his off-campus apartment while members of WEMET executed a search warrant. Copp's father has said his son was shielding his eyes from the officers' flashlights when he was shot.

While police have not said what was found in Copp's apartment, the student's attorney claimed only "a few tablespoons of marijuana" was discovered.

Copp has not been charged with any crime, and the unidentified Ottawa County sheriff's deputy who fired the shot remains on leave.

Organizers of Friday's event expected at least 300 people to join the afternoon protest, but only about 50 marched from the clock tower at GVSU's Pew Campus to Rosa Parks Circle. Related protests attracted 25 people at the University of Michigan, while only four showed at Michigan State University.

"It was a small turnout, but I still think it was worthwhile because we got the word out about what happened to people who didn't know," said Jon Beagley, organizer of the MSU protest.

At U-M's Central Campus, the crowd, trying to bring attention to Copp's shooting, called for an end to the drug war, legalization of marijuana and release of additional information about the shooting.

"I was so devastated by the horrific shooting," said Francesca Bardinelli, a U-M student from the Scranton, Pa., area. "This could be anyone. The war on drugs affects us all, especially students."

The protest was organized by the U-M members of Students for Sensible Drug Policy. Chris Chiles, a U-M student, said: "Our enemy is not the police, it is the war on drugs."

Meanwhile, GVSU President Thomas Haas, who earlier demanded answers about the shooting, said Michigan State Police, the investigating agency, have "responded quickly and positively to my letter regarding the investigation into Derek Copp's shooting. The Department assured me that it is conducting its investigation in a timely and thorough manner, and that I will be advised when it has been completed."

He said Bart Merkle, the dean of students, met with Copp and his family, and said accommodations -- available to injured or sick students -- would be made to help Copp in his return to school.

"There has been demonstrated support from Derek's friends and others in the community who are seeking answers regarding the shooting. These responses underscore the sense of community that is such an important part of Grand Valley State University."

Greg Hatt, a former GVSU student and organizer of the local event, said Copp supported the efforts.

"He's behind us 100 percent. He would be here if he could be."

It's disappointing that the turnout was so low for the protest march.  I would of bought a megaphone, put up flyers, and dragged everyone I could think of to it if I lived near there.

Michigan student shot by deputy to be sentenced
August 10, 2009 - wlns.com

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (AP) - A Grand Valley State University student who was shot by police during a raid on his off-campus apartment faces sentencing on a drug charge.

Twenty-year-old Derek Copp of Spring Arbor was to appear Monday in Ottawa County Circuit Court for sentencing. He pleaded guilty to a felony marijuana charge in June.

Copp admitted selling marijuana to an undercover police officer.

Copp was unarmed when Ottawa County Sheriff's deputy Ryan Huizenga shot him once in the chest March 11 while executing a search warrant at Copp's apartment. Huizenga was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to reckless discharge of a firearm and later returned to duty.

Fucking disgusting. Cops are supposed to protect us and serve us. They're always saying "oh well we thought he was going for a gun" so they shot him without even knowing! The cop should be the one taking a bullet because you can't just assume they're pulling out a gun You need to wait and find out and actually see a gun or hear a shot or else you risk shooting unarmed people! I also think any cop that does this needs to be immediately fired, that would start setting an example. All these cops who are assholes go on paid leave. And how do they just not disclose why they shot him??? They really do believe they are above the law and it's fucking sickening.

How do we go about changing this?? How can someone who's not a senator or president change this??

Copp sentenced in pot bust gone awry
August 10, 2009 - WOOD TV

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) - When it was all said and done, the GVSU student and the Ottawa County Sheriff's deputy who shot him in a pot bust gone awry each received nearly identical punishments.

Grand Valley State University student Derek Copp, shot and injured by a deputy in a marijuana raid, was sentenced Monday to probation, fines and community service.

The sentence, which will be expunged if he stays out of trouble, was similar to that imposed on the Ottawa County deputy who fired the shot.

Ottawa County Circuit Judge Edward Post handed down the sentence five months after the shooting that led to campus protests: 18 months probation, 40 hours of community service and $300 in fines. He also gave Copp permission to leave the state.

The judge also will allow the record to be expunged if Copp completes probation and stays out of trouble.

Ottawa County Deputy Ryan Huizenga was sentenced to six months probation, $400 in fine and 80 hours of community service after pleading guilty to reckless discharge of a weapon, a misdemeanor.

Huizenga has returned to duty after a stint on paid administrative leave.

Copp told the judge he appreciated "the leniency," which will allow him to "be able to further my education and continue to pursue my goals in life."

He told reporters he plans to return to Grand Valley. His attorney, Frederick Dilley, wouldn't comment when asked whether the shooting could lead to a civil suit.

Copp, 20, was shot in the chest and seriously injured March 11 when the West Michigan Enforcement Team raided the off-campus apartment he shared with another student.

Copp and his roommate, Conor Bardallis, were charged with delivery or manufacturing marijuana -- a felony that carries up to four years in prison.

Copp pleaded guilty, while Bardallis's case is pending.

The incident began on March 11, 2009, at Campus View Apartments located at 10255 42nd Avenue in Allendale Township.

Copp sold an undercover officer 3.3 grams of marijuana -- about one-eighth of an ounce -- for $60 shortly before drug officers raided his apartment at 10255 42nd Avenue in Allendale Township.

Bardallis allegedly sold an undercover officer 3 grams (one-tenth of an ounce) for $50 in February.

Huizenga was entering the rear sliding glass door of Copp's lower-level apartment when he fired the shot. Prosecutors say he mistakenly had his finger on the trigger, instead of the trigger lock, which led to the shooting. Copp was at the door, pulling open the curtain, when the shot was fired.

Update ...

Derek Copp sues Ottawa County over drug raid shooting
March 9, 2011 - wzzm13.com

GRAND RAPIDS -- A GVSU student shot in the chest by a deputy during a drug raid is suing the deputy who fired the shot, the Ottawa County sheriff, and the county.

In March 2009, Derek Copp was living in an off-campus apartment he shared with a roommate, who was the target of a drug investigation.  Earlier, an undercover deputy had purchased marijuana from the roommate, according to Copp's lawsuit.

On the night of March 11, 2009, deputies acting on a search warrant entered the apartment.  One deputy, Ryan Huizenga, ran into Copp and shined a light into his face.  Huizenga's gun discharged, and the bullet hit Copp in the chest.

Huizenga was later disciplined by the sheriff's department for not having his finger on his trigger guard and for not holding the weapon in the proper position.  He also pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless discharge of a firearm and was sentenced to six months probation.  Huizenga was reinstated to full duty, but was removed from the drug enforcement team that conducted the raid.

Derek Copp was charged with delivery and manufacturing of marijuana.  He later pleaded to a lesser charge, and was sentenced to 18 months probation.

The federal lawsuit claimes Huizenga, Sheriff Gary Rosema, and Ottawa County acted with "gross negligence and willfull recklessness" in how the raid was conducted.  Copp and his lawyers are asking a judge to make changes in how Ottawa County deputies use firearms and conduct searches.

Copp and his lawyers are also seeking damages from Huizenga, Rosema, and the county for the results of their alleged actions.

Fuck the police. they are nothing more than underworked overpaid pieces of shit, gang members in uniform who just happen to be politically correct.

Fuck them and everything they "stand" for. May that cop rot from the inside slowly, may his kids be born leppars. I hope that cop dies a slow miserable death for "reacting" as they like to call it. They have killed more and through our support (taxes) they are given paid vacations (paid leave) to keep at it...  :laser:  :minigun:

And if he had shot the man who pointed a gun at him? (despite his not endangering or threatening anyone in any way?)

Would it cease to be self defense just because a little pot was involved? Just because he was an officer?

At what % of raids resulting in non-violent individuals being shot does it become reasonable to shoot anyone who crashes through your door before seeing who they are on the assumption you're about to get ventilated? Why are the police above the law?

He (the officer) should be in jail. Unquestionably. You don't accidentally shoot someone at close proximity in the chest. Police aren't carrying hair triggers last I checked.

I'm sure the victim was happy to escape with his life, but I am also sure he dreams of retribution (revenge? Justice?) often.

I'm so glad I don't live in the US

I was raided for pot when I was 17, I was living on a large property (120 acres) and the cops thought I was operating some kind of massive operation (I wasn't, was growing like 6 plants) and was supplying the whole state with weed, so 4 carloads of cops and a van show up, the entire regional drug squad.

not one gun was drawn during the entire event.

(not only that, they didn't even find my grow  all they found was a single branch from a male plant drying on the window sill in my room to collect pollen and a bong, still enough to charge me though :frown: )

I wish I found out who snitched me and why, i wasn't even selling weed to anyone.
