Is it possible to do this......

Does any one know if its possible to take a peices of a fungus cake and use them to colonize new jars of substrate . If this works would it be just as good as just using spores to colonize the new jars.

Yes it is possible and works quite well. Great care must be taken to avoid contamination of the new substrate while spawning.

yup it works. It can be risky though, since ya have to open the jars to transfer it.

If done right though... the only drawback to substrate transfers vs. spore injection, that I have found, is colonizing time. Since you cannot shake cakes like you could grain spawn.... it is like injecting spores in only one location, the top. It takes a little longer for it to spread thoughout the jar. At least that is what it seems for my substrate-substrate transfers.

Although... as it is already in myc. stages and does not have to germinate from spores maybe the times are a little closer then I think ???
anyone else?

Well ive heard that it actually takes way less time when you do the transfer. I've read that you put a whole bunch of small pieces in the jar so that it colonises faster, if you just plop one single piece on top right in the middle, i can see it taking way longer......It probably has to do with how thick the substrate is as well, if its real solid without many cracks for the mycellium to creep through, then it would take longer too id think:)

I agree, I found that brf to brf transfer shortens colonization time considerably. This is because the mycelium only has to continue growing, whereas when you inject with spores, they must germinate, which takes time.
