is there anyway to tell where oysters may grow in spring?
    #9945728 - 03/10/09 01:13 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I have been back on an area that my family owns that is old trees lots of birch and maples. I have seen a bunch of tress and logs that look like they have some types of mushrooms growing off them but not sure what type they aren't the big white shelf fungi that I used to write on as a kid with a stick these look like, well oyster shells. I am new to all this so I am wondering is this where oysters will grow later in the season and this is just the mycelium core? What doe they look like after the fruits have died and wintered over? Are there any visible signs on the outside of a log at this time of the year in the NE?

it's pretty much impossible to predict if a log is going to fruit oysters just by looking at it. It is, however, quite common to spot mycelium on logs and trees. The only way (in my experience that is) to predict if it might be oyster fungi is an educated guess. Have you seen oysters on the log before, or in the forest? Even if you have, you'll just have to wait and see, oysters don't always grow on the same logs year after year.

If you're just starting out in this hobby, then you've made a good choice for a first species to hunt. They're very common, easy to ID, and have very few look-a-likes. You should also check grassy/sandy soil areas in the fall for shaggy manes Coprinus Comatus, another great beginner mushroom because it is so distinctive, and also common in your area (i grew up in that part of the world)another good springtime mushroom is dryad's saddle  Polyporus Squamosus. It is VERY common in the east, and is one of the first to fruit.

Cheers,

They look like little dried up mushrooms, lol, i know, not much help, but you'll learn to recognize them after you start finding and recognizing them fresh.

yeah that's crazy, oysters seems quite well adapted to cold, I find frozen oysters ever year up here in Canada. You guys actually got snow this year too, or am I mistaken?
