Tofu is actually pretty awesome (recipe & Pic)

My brother turned me onto Tofu... I always thought it was bland, flavorless and overpriced... which it usually is... but I found a Japanese place that sells it really cheap, and if you season it right, it's actually really good, and good for you.
I usually pick up weight from December to February and always go on a 3-4week ultra diet (1300calories/day) around this time before I start hitting the bike trails and playing sports in the spring and summer to stay fit.
This is an excellent recipe for those trying to cut back to get back in shape for the spring/summer.... very tasty and good for you.
It's called Curry Tofu Lobster salad. (220 calories) Good sized portion.
(if you're a vegan or vegetarian just don't add the fish)
cubed Tofu 1/2 cup (50cal/0Fcal) Curry sauce TBSP (60cal/45Fcal) Imitation Lobster chunks 1/4th cup (80cal/20Fcal) Small salad 1/2 to 1 cup(est. 30cal/0Fcal)
Recipe:
Cut tofu in small squares. Add tofu and lobster chunks in frying pan on medium heat, add curry coconut sauce, cover for about 10 minutes, stir frequently to avoid sticking, add a TBSP or two of water if sticking occurs. Optional, add pepper, Italian seasoning and squeeze pepperoncinis (a brine-flavored pepper) juice into mix, add pepperoncinis in.
put a small bed of salad (veggies only to maintain cal) down on a plate, when the mix is heated and done cooking, add over top of salad.
It's very good, and I'm usually a die hard meat heater that doesn't like tofu and stuff like that.
Should look something like this when it's done. Try it!

Hey, thanks for the links. I only eat it once in a while, so I don't think I'll have any problems. But it's always good to see two sides of the story.

The phytoestrogen story needs to die already. It started over some marketing gimmick of people that wanted to pass soybeans as progesterone supplements. They didn't work. They tested it on humans without significant findings. Plant estrogen a very limited ability to interact with humans as a hormone. And even then so, it is harmless.
Yes there are two sides to the story. You wanted to consume soy, and then someone posted links about an organization for and by the meat and dairy industry of the US. No wonder they see soy as a threat.
Some of this info should roll off the back of your typical consumer: Fragile proteins are denatured during high temperature processing to make soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein. That is true. It happens to all proteins that go in your mouth. Unless you are into raw eggs and salmonella.
What you won't find on their web pages are studies that contradict or render their work as insignificant. Don't fall for that crap, because it is nothing more than a fancy tax-exempt advertisement. Look up the info yourself. And look at the overall health of a population and its dietary habits before reading up on what happens when you feed a rat twice its body weight soy protein because that is just crazy.

Don't worry, I didn't really buy it. I used to date a girl that was vegan for 8 years of her life, and she was fine.... plus, a Johns Hopkins Graduate and Practicing Physician that we know personally said it was beneficial and did not mention any adverse side affects per a normal balanced diet.
I'm sure if you ate 6lbs of it a day you might have a problem, but put that up against 6lbs of Cheddar Cheese.... it's all how you read into it... I know there's nothing wrong with Tofu, it's a good cholesterol free food.
But either way, I always like to read both sides of the story... however, that side didn't change my mind.
Cheers.

and yes, raw eggs are awesome. so is raw meat.
Look up Weston A. Price Foundation, the org behind that pamphlet. They take sponsorships from farmers, lobby the government to ban soy, and discourage the rest of us consumers from straying outside of their sponsors.
Kinda like how the cotton industry will do anything to discourage a decent alternative. That doesn't mean the pamphlet warning you not to consume cannabis isn't pulling your chain.

Everyone gives me shit for eating Tofu. They're like 'Why not just eat meat?' But here it's cheaper, and a good way to not over do your red meat intake. I also like the firm tofu, marinated in garlic/soy sauce/chilli cut into good slice. Char grilled in a burger with sweet chilli sauce...mmmm
I'm eating an italian sausage/thai curry/stirfry ATM, it's a little bizzare, but damn good.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tofu
Quote:
The production of tofu from soy milk is similar to the production of cheese from milk
Quote:
Tofu is made by coagulating soy milk and pressing the resulting curds. Although pre-made soy milk may be used, most tofu producers begin by making their own soy milk, which is produced by soaking, grinding, boiling and straining dried (or, less commonly, fresh) soybeans.
Coagulation of the protein and oil (emulsion) suspended in the boiled soy milk is the most important step in the production of tofu. This process is accomplished with the aid of coagulants. Two types of coagulants (salts and acids) are used commercially.[3] The third type of coagulant, enzymes, is not yet used commercially but shows potential for producing both firm and "silken" tofu.
