everything looks really dry too. you need to moisten up those cases.

The light is a 24 inch Fluorescent Grow Light specifically for growing plants that I found at Walmart for like 10 bucks.

Greetings,

Here are a few comments for you:

1. Cold shocking cubensis (a tropical /sub-tropical species) is not required and may even retard fruiting.

2. If using a casing layer, most cultivators wait until the substrate is fully (100%) colonized before applying it. Then they incubate the cased substrate tray until myc. appears and then they put it into fruiting conditions.  Some cultivators put the cased tray into fruiting conditions immediately after applying the casing layer, some after they see the first myc. at the surface and some when myc. has appeared on 20% of the casing layer.  There is even a 'late casing' tek where you don't apply the casing layer until primordia or even pins appear on the substrate surface.

3. Your casing layer appears to have a lot of 'debris' in it (sticks and little chunks of wood).  Moist wood is an excellent habitat for trichoderma (green mold) .. so be watching for it.

edit: the little bit of lime in your jiffy mix casing layer will help ward off the green mold.

Mist and fan.

Good luck.

Thank you for your help uncle_rico!  I'm glad I'm doing this correctly then.

Yeah there is a bit of debris in my casing layer ;x so after I read your post I went to pick out as many sticks and wood chips as possible with latex gloves on.

More mycelium is starting to poke through the casings!

I can't wait to start seeing some pins showing

I'm putting my other casing into my FC in hopefully 2 days.  I put a casing layer onto it today and there is already myc growth showing at the top.

Thank you again for your help!

In the above pic of your cases. They still look really dry. I like to see the dark color like the very last pic. I would take your water bottle and straight spray into the cases until you see a nice layer of moisture. It wont hurt anything this is the time to take advantage before there are pins. One of the above pics looks like your getting some shrinkage too, this could be because they are too dry or because the myc is going to town in the substrate. or both. But I really recommend  getting the moisture right. The tupperware in the top pic looks great. I would dunk and roll in verm, since verm helps with moisture control you can then birth it and compare the growth to your cases, if its much faster than you know you have a moisture problem in the cases for sure.

For the future, (and Im not sure if I read wrong) I would incubate cakes until 100% colonized, then case and re incubate right away until you can see the ring of mycelium expand to the bottom of your tupperware. this should be a good indicator that your case is ready to birth.

All in all keep up the good work.

Thank you for the feedback oddiseus! ^^

I think it's just my camera that's making them look so dry.  My cases are very moist and a very dark color in person, i mist alot.

You seem to be doing pretty well mate! The only observation I'll comment on is that your layer of perlite seems a bit shallow. I believe that 4-5 inches is optimal.

I wish you and your mushies well!

Hi there Moniker_Mike!  Yeah I know lol I read that 4-5 is optimal but my FC is doing just fine with inch and a half of perlite that's in there.  The humidity is always at 99% and there is just a little bit of condensation on the walls not too much though.

Thank you very much, and thanks for you info!! ^^

you should definetly make a cake out of that. look up hippiechick's grows. she does big cakes as well. as far as rolling it, roll it in vermiculite, not jiffy mix. good luck!!! looking good so far!!!

It's so exciting to see my baby pins!  I can't stop wanting to go and try to fan them a little more or mist the other casings a bit just to get a glimpse hehe.

shouldnt you have waited for your casing layer to be a bit colonized before you put it in ur FC? your pinset wouldve been much better, IMO.

when i case mine, i always incubate my casing around 75 farenheit b4 i fruit it. but thats just me.

here are some pics from my first ever attempt. i was also kinda impatient and didnt wait as long for my casing to get more colonized. although i did get an okay pinset for my first time. but now i usually wait for my casing to be pretty colonized. and when u do see patches of myc popping out and not in other places, its ok to just patch those up so your myc can start poppin up evenly all over ur casing

werent too many at first but at the end:

grew like crazy!

Hey ibusturcherry thanks for the comment.  Yeah I realized that with my first couple casings but it was too late :frown:

With my newest casing that's in the FC I let it incubate for 4 days and there was probably 40-50% mycelium growth poking through the casing layer.  I patched it and put it in the FC and since then the mycelium has been poking through the patching and casing layer nicely.

Nice grows by the way!  I hope mine can be as nice as yours at some point ^^

How much did you get dry weight from your first grown and how many casings did you have?

those pics from my first grow were over 3 yrs ago. it was my first attempt and i WAS very excited at the results. i only had 2 casings and each looked the same. about 7g dry from each. sad thing is that once i "tested" them out, potency seemed very very low. but it could have been my dosage as  i ate them fresh and hardly felt anything. feeling disappointed i stopped since then but just recently began growing again with the same strain (australian) and have had much MUCH BETTER potency results.

i must have lucked out this time with better genetics but what i made up for in potency i lacked in yield. my first grow does look ok for a beginner but no where near most of the users on this site. hopefully ill get to their level one day and so will you. practice makes perfect!:D

Bumping and giving a small update.

Checked on everything this morning and my biggest pin is a inch and a half long.  I really hope these fruits get alot bigger before their veil breaks.

Also I'm starting to think my unknown cubensis could be either ecuador or PES Hawaiian.

Does anyone have any other suggestions of what this could be from the pictures?

Any advice?  Comments?  Anyone out there? ; ;

the fruit you took to make a spore print of, shouldve waited longer for the veil to be completely open. youll still get a very good print if the veil is open flat, like a pancake.

yup I'm a girl hehe.

Thank you for your responses ^^

The cap I took a spore print of isn't in that picture.. but the veil was completely gone for it and the cap was very flat.

I'm waiting until tomorrow though for my other mushies to see if they get any bigger or if their caps open up more.

Now I need to find a super cheap scale!

I'm new to forums, is it wrong to be on a thread and ask someone to look at a question you posted? (in the same "mushroom cultivation forum")

 Good to know. I have to say, for a first time grow, this seems to be very well executed. Way better than my first pathetic attempt at a poorly mixed PF cake in a shitty aquarium!

Nice layout too. You did your research, and it shows.

Here's to a good harvest!

hehe yeah they are pretty cute  thanks for the comment ^^

It's just too bad they're not as big as I was hoping :frown: probably due to not enough substrate, next time I'll add much more.

Also thanks Davinici ^^ I have spent alot of time reading up on everything, I thought I was doing it all right but luckily with this first grow I've found all my mistakes and errors ^^

So things to remember:

1.) Make your substrate thick when doing a casing.

2.) Mist and mist if your casing looks dry, it should always look moist.  If there are pins or fruits growing point the spray bottle upwards so the mist falls lightly on the mushies.

3.) Lots of FAE and fan everywhere equally, if you don't you'll have blue bruising mushies like mine ; ;

4.) I've got my Coco coir on the way and I'm going to birth my cakes to a mixture of coco coir/coffee/vermiculite next time with maybe a 50/50 Jiffy mix with vermiculite casing, still can't decide.

yeah coco coir is a pretty easy medium to work with. easy to get, pretty cheap and very clean in the preparation. if you haven't found that one yet
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9289857#9289857
this is a very nice pictorial for coir bulk substrate.

50/50 peat/verm casings with gypsum and hydrated lime have worked pretty well for me so far but many fellow growers swear on not casing and using wax-paper to introduce pinning instead. maybe you should do two similar bulks with and without casing to find out for yourself what you prefer.

I mean adding a casing is a bit of a hassle, you need the ingredients, need to mix them and pasteurise it so if there are not that many benefits why do all that.

I didn't draw that conclusion myself yet but I'm experimenting so when I get results I'll let you know. The question is what works best for you.

Keep us posted with the next projects of yours.
Really good work so far.

casing is the shit. check this thread, especially his pictures from the 3/19 update....

So yeah, casing is recommended if you are on the level. :crazy2:

Poor humidity in your FC was the culprit here, not the lack of casing.  Granted, a casing will help you achieve good results with suboptimal humidity, but it isn't a silver bullet for higher yields.  You can tell that your humidity was too low because the uncased substrate only pinned on the sides, where the proximity to the edge of the pan kept your substrate from drying out.

from the same thread. so this experiment might not be very representative.

don't get me wrong. I'm actually a friend of casing but if you have an optimal environment you might not need it.

DaVinci and Roggen_Rocker thank you so much for your help and your comments ^^

I have done a ton of reading on casings already and even though people say it wont help the yield of mushies I'm still going to use one for now I believe.

Unfortunately at the moment I don't have enough money to do a experiment for a bulk grow with a casing and one with no casing and just wax paper on top, but hopefully soon I can do something like that ^^

Hahaha yeah ; ;  These look amazing compared to those tiny ones... although the person I tested them out on tripped hard off of 1.5 grams dry.  So after I saw that, those tiny ones weren't so bad anymore

Actually after putting those coffee grounds on my unknown casing the pins that are growing now are super huge and fat.. I'll update that casing tomorrow.

Theres no doubt in my mind that those mini mushies are more potent by weight than their larger counterparts.

Nice!!! You seem to get the hang of it quite fast. Getting better and better.

Did you think about maybe cloning some of those nice cluster of the TC tray? But I guess they are already harvested but with a clone you'd probably get a more even pinset all over the place. But you might even get that on the second flush.

I'll keep watching.

Are you going to try some of your mushrooms eventually or just doing it for your friends?

Anyways nice update... keep them coming.

Peace

So, check this out. You know how your biggest casing was an "unknown strain", it produced a poor 1st flush with very small mushies, and you say you found out it was Treasure Coast?

Here's the description of Treasure Coast from Ralphstersspores.com:

"Lots of aborts always on the first flush. Almost none from there on in. Again, about 50+ dried. Less on other flushes, but much larger mushrooms. I didn't know TC's could get that big. Another nice feature with the Treasure Coasts are that they keep flushing. Great potency too!"

I don't know how much weight I would give this description because I read so much "cube is a cube" stuff, but I would say thats a damn good explanation. But I guess you had other issues too, moisture, humidity...... But good shit, looks nice.

Thanks for the comments guys ^^

Roggen_Rocker:  "Did you think about maybe cloning some of those nice cluster of the TC tray? But I guess they are already harvested but with a clone you'd probably get a more even pinset all over the place. But you might even get that on the second flush."

I would love to start cloning  but I think that's still a little to advanced for me at the moment ;x  I've been looking into making LC's with honey or karo syrup and such but I don't have a pressure cooker and I'm not really sure if you can boil LC's in a pot like I do for my cakes.  But I'll look up more on it... If it is somewhat easy and I don't need a PC I might try to make some and innoc them into WBSF Cakes with a little bit of coffee grounds added.

Roggen_Rocker:  "Are you going to try some of your mushrooms eventually or just doing it for your friends?"

Hehe yes I do plan to eventually take them at some point.  I've just been super busy with classes and other things lately and I want to have a day where I'll have alot of time and no worries when I take them.  I am a bit I suppose not nervous but wary about taking them too.  I'm a really paranoid person and I'm not sure how I would handle seeing random things moving or twisting around or changing different colors lol.  But I do want to try them anyway and if it goes bad then it goes bad I guess lol.

Green2whitethumb thanks for posting that!  I didn't look up any descriptions for TC when I realized that's what they are.  Also I wasn't told that's what they are either, just after doing some research and picture hunting I realized what they were.  I was also told the original story about how that spore syringe came to be that I posted wasn't right and there was a miscommunication somewhere.  I think we were all just really high lol.

For cloning you dont HAVE to make an LC or an agar, even though it would be better for you. but if your still looking to try some kind of cloning and gettinsg some experience with it and reaping the benfits, next time during one of your flushes, take a tissue sample from one of your best fruits and use that sample to inoculate a jar.

you'll probably see slow results but itll still work nonetheless. just keep it sterile, obviously

Thank you very much for the comments  yup I'm pretty happy with my results  Unfortunately after trying to experiment with my casings my TC one now has overlay on it in some spots, my first GT tray only has like 5 pins total and they're growing on the sides but that's because I put coffee grounds on top.  My second GT casing is just starting to pin again and I'm waiting on my third.  I'm pretty sure I'll start my monotub grow tomorrow.

But thank you again for having a look at my grow  and thank you so much Shroomery for all the awesome info and tips  you all are awesome!

Oh I forgot to add it but I'll just post it here.  The total dry weight for the second flush of Treasure Coast was 21.2 grams dry

For my 3rd GT tray I got 4.6 grams dry and from my GT cake so far I have 7.7 grams dry but I still have a couple caps drying so when they're done I'll add them to the total.
