GETTING WORRIED....NEED HELP

My jars have been inoculated now for 9 nine days and there is still is no sign of mycelium growing. I followed the PF Tek completely and cant figure out whats going on. BRF substrate jars were boiled for 90 mins with the water half-way up the jars with a washcloth under them as to not transfer too much heat. I let them sit overnight and inoculated them the next morning in a plastic enclosed cupboard that was sprayed with anitbacterial spray and the needle of the syringe was sterilized between each jar. They have since been stored in the dark at 80-86 degrees and nothing has happened yet. I find it hard to believe the spores were bad because I used 3 different syringes and knocked the jars up in thirds with B+, Burma, and Golden Teachers. Neither set of 3 has any signs of mycelium. Does anybody know what could be going on here.

well a couple problems here: for one you should have steamed them with the water level just below the bottom of the jars not touching. and the biggy here is your storing them wayyyyy too hot. room temp friend is all you need. and when you say you sterilized between jars i hope you mean with a flame, and not just alchohol. Let's see what others say, But definitely lower those temps!

Well I can first start by saying You did not follow the correct measures of the PF Tek. The water is not suppose to touch the jars. The steam from the water is used to sterilize not the water. No need to go above 80 degrees during incubation. Going higher than that has been known to slow growth and an ideal breeding ground for contamination.
Wait another week. Sometimes the strains may be a slow colonizer.

Do a few test runs with the pot.
Try to figure out how much water you need to keep steam going for 90minutes
Then use something to prop those jar up out of that water. Use anything .. If you have nothing, make something. I've personally seen somebody take empty soda cans rinsed out that were placed in standing up with aluminum foil over them for a base
Jars are a few degree's warmer then the temperature around them. You don't want them going over 80 degree's
I put mine in a bookshelf in a bedroom that is heated to 70degree's. (rest of my house is at 60, I'm cheap)

ohh yea they don't need to be in the dark for colonization
everybody suggest put them in indirect light from day 1

When u sterilize with ur jars in water alot of moisture tends to get in them even with aluminum foil over them. Set the out of the water. I use a few layers of jar lids seperated by foil. When ur incubating u want ur temps around 73 degrees F. Then be patient. you should see some growth after about a week or so.

From day 3 of my last grow project only half my jars started growing, even though all the jars were from the same syringe. It took about 2 weeks before the other half showed any signs of growth. So I'd say don't panic yet, give em' at least two weeks or so before you start getting too worried, sometimes they just take a while. Id say don't let the temp get over 82 if your gonna incubate, I just inoculated another batch three days ago, 2 separate strains, incubated @ 82 degrees and got my first signs of growth from both today. I've let water touch my jars during sterilization (in a slow cooker on high for 90 min) every time I grow, and have had abosolutly no problems thus far.

it seems now that patience was the key here.....i just noticed two small patches of mycelium about 1 cm in diameter starting to grow in one of the jars. i just hope that the other 11 jars start to do the same

I followed the PF Tek to the letter and it took my PT jars a month to show growth in them. Growing shrooms takes a lot of patience. Go slow and you will find that it is worth the effort.

I have another question to go along with my grow. Since the cakes are taking so long to start colonizing, should I wait longer than 1 week to birth after 100% colonization? Im wondering since usually you only have to wait 1 week after for cakes that start colonizing within a few days

lookin good my man,
***Advice*** fresh air makes mushies grow(as well as 100 percentage), keep that bad boy in a cupboard and try not let the stale air lose(in other words keep it closed). Also i know its damn near impossible, but let it be, colonization will be quicker(at least it'll seem like it:))
I had a jar that I checked like 4 times a day, It started growing mushrooms before half colonization, created a real dilema. Could of been a number of things but what i gathered...it was the air. good luck dude, you'll prolly have the ingredients for a good trip soon.

Where did you get your spores???? this is 8 days growth I'm now at like 12 or 13 days and fully colonized... I had problems the first 2 times I attempted to grow. pretty sure it was the sporestores bad spores that did my first 2 attempts in. all I have to say is shop with shroomery sponsors and ask alot of questions.

I didnt do my research of vendors before I made my purchase.....I went the cheaper way and bought from SporeStore (should've went with a Shroomery vendor). It's taken a while now but almost all of the jars are showing signs of mycelium. I think the slow colonization was because the fine verm may have been too compacted in the substrate along with the fact that I had the foil crimped tightly around the lid of the jar making it near air tight. I have since loosened the foil as well as the lids a little to allow for air exchange and thats when mycelium started showing up in the rest of the jars.

your cakes are wet. Probably water that spilled in the holes while PC'n or hopefully not Boiling... (you can get away with it.)
I've colonized wet cakes that looked like that before. I've also seen some fail too. Good luck to ya laddie.

Now that I think about it...the moisture could def be a factor in the slow colonization. When I mixed up the substrate, it seemed like it was very dry and I used 8 cups verm: 3 cups BRF: 3 cups water. I figured that it shouldnt have been so dry so I added about another cup of water, thinking it would be better. Looking back now, I shouldve just stuck to the recipe. I just mixed up some more substrate to make a cake in a 2 cup container. I used 1 1/3 cup verm, 1/2 cup BRF and 1/2 cup of water. It was a lot easier to work with than the prior batch (easier to fill container and level out). I have the container sterilizing right now and Sunday when I get back into town, I'll 'noc it up the same way I did the others and see if it starts growing mycelium sooner than my other jars did. At least then I'll know that the water content was my problem in the first place.

You still have your ratios off. It's 1 cup verm to 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of BRF. Make sure you mix your verm and water before putting in your BRF, this ensures that the BRF will properly coat the pieces of vermiculite.
