what happens if a casing is thin?
    #993108 - 10/25/02 04:48 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

i have 3 inches of straw with about 1/4" casing soil on top of it. i just did it, and dont have time to make some more 50-50 on account of the 'what are you doing cooking dirt" factor. so what would happen if i were to leave it thin?

It will colonise faster and dry out quicker. 1/4 inches isn't all that bad. I'd go for at least 1/2 inch. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't dry out.

Thicker casing layer = greater yield. Make it as thick as you want.

Smaller mush is the consequence of a thin layer of substrate.
From my experience at least, but I think it has more to do with the nutrients made available to the fruit.

Thin casing can also result in overlay.

"Thicker casing layer = greater yield. Make it as thick as you want."

By this logic you would get a greater yield from a casing layer one foot deep than one inch deep, which is not a the case. There is a point that mycelium will not be able to colonise given the limited supply of nutrients.
