Humidification
    #993777 - 10/26/02 12:11 AM (15 years, 23 hours ago)

i keep my fruiting cakes at around 72-76 F, but it seems my humidity only stays at like 60%.  Any ideas how to raise it up?  I looked in the FAQ.  I'm using perilite, but i guess its not doin the trick.

How do you measure the humidity? Did you calibrate your hygrometer?

As long your room is not colder than 21?C(70?F) there is no need for heating.

Calibrate your hygrometer. How? Grow/find section.

Using a space heater will dry out the space that it heats. You could try this http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm and just cut a hole in the lid of the fruiting chamber as to allow light. I know that this is an incubator, but you could use it as a fruiting chamber by keeping the temp in the mid 70's.

Thats a pretty good idea Skikid, personaly I wouldnt go that far unless my room was really cold (Below 66-67f)....
The space heater seems fine, alot of those rubbermaids are not 100% sealed and let in air.......
Is there still water below the perlite? Sometimes it evaperates fast on me and I dont notice untill the humidity is way down.....Thats all I can think of, Im sure theres a few more people with ideas

maybe i will try adding water to the perilite.
the space heater is not directly inside or aimed at the place where i have my tereriums, its just in my room in general, cuz the house gets pretty cold at night. and especially in my room it seemed. i suppose i could also try putting something around the lip of the top of the rubbermaid, to make sure it has a nice tight fit.

thanks for the help. all info is mass appreciated=D

my friend adds enough water to make the perlite float. the idea is that the water is "absorbed" by the perlite and the bumps on the perlite provide more surface area for water to touch the air. my friend also puts an aquarium pump with an air stone into the perlite water thus providing air exchange and increased humidity. the pump was like $5 and two air stones came in a package for like $1.50. kmart.
