Goddamn I love yerba mate!

For months my gourd and bombilla have been laying forlorn, unused. I ran out of mate over a year ago, but just transitioned over to drinking more espresso.
I finally went out and picked up some mate from a local import grocer (500g for $2.99), and am happily sipping on my gourd again.
I think I prefer mate over coffee or tea.

Mate is pretty nice. Not too intense, long lasting. I think raw cocoa would have to be my favorite xanthine stimulant though.

I found this stuff at a Mediterranean import store, kinda bizarre. I've seen it a couple times at random hispanic restaurants (it's big in Argentina). They didn't advertise the stuff really, there were just a bunch of kilo bags displayed by the entrance that I'm sure were for sale.
Hippy grocery stores usually have it too, it's just kinda spendy.
And it's definitely not something to be prepared like a normal herbal tea. I think everyone who drinks the stuff should spring for a gourd and bombilla too. It's a whole different experience... probably due to the amount of leaf it takes to load the gourd, which is a lot more than someone would normally use brewing a tea out of it.
Those indigenous Argentinians have it right: Drink gourds of yerba mate throughout the day, snuff tobacco juice, quid coca, and smoke mapacho. Quite a handy daily pharmacopeia

Really? I love raw cocoa/cacao nibs. I much on them as snacks all the time. But they don't do much more me besides flavor, unless I eat a ton and then I just start to feel flushed.
But if I combine cocoa (1/2 to 1 Tbsp) with ~2 grams of syrian rue, it provides a very long-lasting stimulation. I'd be wary of pushing the dosage too much in this combination. I think it would quickly become unpleasant. At a low dose, it's a nice tool.

Yerba mate is bomb. Been addicted for years. I buy the 5 pound bag of Gaucho's fuerte mate and make it in a drip coffee maker. It's only like $50 for 5 pounds.

It's a leaf, but the fuerte blend I use they form the powder into granules so it brews like coffee. It's bomb!

I don't know that I'd say it tastes better than coffee. I love me some black-as-oil espresso or turkish coffee, or some bright and full-bodied medium roast from a french press.
But it has a pleasant flavor to it (bitter on the first pull or two through the gourd, mellowing to sweet green tea tones after that)

No, I always drink it black. But I don't drink plain auto-drip coffee.
