Leaves as a substrate
    #9923854 - 03/06/09 03:58 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Ok, the Live Oaks are doing their spring shedding of leaves. Any thoughts on using oak leaves as a substrate for growing oysters? Assuming they are pasteurized, any considerations?  Would tannins be an issue?

yes, tannins would be an issue
pH would be an issue, too

probably so, one thing Ive learned if Ive learned anything in mycology though (at least with cubes) .... rules are made to be broken.

Things that people say wont work over and over again sometimes do, you wont know unless you try.

TRY IT!

No disrespect captin ... cuz your probably right, but f' it ... lol give it a shot and see what works. Experimentation is everything. Something I need to keep in mind  :P

like ozz said, you wont know until you try. Maybe use a lime bath instead of pasteurization to help bring up the PH?

Other than Oak leaves may work better, having less tannins and being less acid.  Also the calcium hydroxide bath that Ohms suggests would be quite feasible.

The other thing to be considered would be compacting them sufficiently... if the fungus has to grow too much just getting from one bit of substrate to the next, your results will be poor. More compact is probably better for woodlovers and still quite compact for others.

The other thing that crosses my mind though, is whether you're wondering if this substrate would be somehow "better" than newspaper, cardboard, straw, etc.

In my opinion... no.

Good luck.

Maybe shredding them with a weed whacker/wood chipper and adding in shredded newspaper for bulk would help. Just a guess, though.
