Hiding Their Heads

My friend the sasquatch is experiencing some odd behaviour in his latest batch of pinheads. The pins are growing out of the rice cake and then curving back toward their base and tucking in their heads, making what appears to be a lil mushroom donut! These donuts then proceed to add on bulk without growing up and out ... what the hell is going on? The humidity is rather high and I wonder if that has anything to do with it...

They're in a closet in a dark room but with a light fabric screen instead of closet doors. They get dim ambient light during daylight hours but no direct light. I should mention that this has worked fine before -- this is the first time I have seen such growth. Previous batches grew up nice and strong. Any ideas?

High CO2 concentrations can cause shrooms to grow in strange directions.
