cool idea for p&s?
    #9925178 - 03/06/09 07:53 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

sticky a thread every week where 2 designated shroomery memebers debate over a given topic. the initial debate will be open to the public to view. only the 2 debators will be able to post in the thread during the debate. at the end of the week (or however long) a poll is taken to decide the winner of the debate and the thread is open for posting to everyone.

i think it would be pretty sweet....but i'm thinking we're too lazy.
Is this a cool idea

I would be so down for this, but I think the way I argue would just bring any debate directly into the ground.  Damn dialectic.

We could just do callouts, for example if someone said something in a thread or threads that was dumb someone could call them out on it and then a debate would ensue.

the call-outs already happen and they are usually at least just as dumb as the original statement

And all debates would end with the clever argument, "You sir, are a jack-ass!" or a variant thereof.

I also voted no for the first question, and yes on the second. I'm hesitant about the idea of someone 'winning' the debate. Sometimes it's not about winning, it's about compromising and understanding the opposing viewpoint.

But sometimes it's about 'magic mushrooms controlling human evolution' vs 'real world facts', in which case there is a clear winner

How about.. the first debate be whether or not this idea should be pursued.
The results of it would determine whether or not such "arenas" have a place on these boards.

ya ?

With out deciding a winner, I don't see it as being very fun. I don't see anything wrong with some playful competition.

So what topic/stance would you be willing to support?

come on peeps....looks like we have enough interested people to do this. Who's willing to debate what? Let's see if we can get two people to hold opposing stances...and then start this thing.

I don't like the idea of bringing competition into philosophy. Seems pretty anti-philosophic to me. We can't avoid competition, but why making it a goal?

because it's fun. and how is it anti-philisophical? the concept of a debate is inherently competitive in my opinion.

Alright, I'm down for this on two conditions.

1. The debating parties must first read and understand the Fallacies of Philosophical Debate sticky here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6787104

2. The debating parties must agree to avoid those fallacies.

If I find the debate is deteriorating into fallacies and name calling, I'll lock the thread and declare abeyance.

What's the first topic and who's wants to go first?

--------------------
Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Here's a suggestion for the first topic:

Free will: does it exist?

Couple of flaws here and I voted no/no.  First, with some positions there isn't the required common ground for the argument to proceed.  The idea stems from the ego, that part of human nature that is vile and disgusting.  If you want to get the rush of adrenaline from watching such a display, have at it.  Just don't think everyone here will participate or even watch.  I also don't rubberneck in traffic.

It's easy to explain but harder for competitive types to understand.  For them, everything is competition.  I'm not competitive.  I can discuss the merits of any argument without becoming attached to them with my ego.  Oftentimes, that stems from some insecurity that I lack.  People don't tend to argue about facts that are certain.  Few here would argue the sky is blue or the pope is Roman Catholic.  I see people that spend enormous energy on a topic as the ones that need convincing, not the other way around.

Often. But we don't really derail them. We just go our own way and people follow. You can't derail folk who are intent on their subject.

Philosophy should be a charity, not a competition.  We should help each other seek the truth by improving our own and others' arguments, not trying to win the argument ourself.  It is not who is right but what is right.

A nice altrustic debate being impossible does not mean we have to make it some sort of sport.

But it could be nice if both debaters avoid all attacks and aggressive, blinded behaviour. However, it will still be a matter of rhetoric I think, and the debaters will still feel it as a competition, since we are reading everything they say with a critical eye.

Those truly interested in actually debating should be forced to defend views contrary to their own.  Now THAT would be something I'd read.
