This was a reply to C.M. Mann... (The quotes are his.)
Quote:

Heh, the obvious, man you have alot to learn about philosophy, try getting in depth with epistemology i thought that was just common sense until I got drilled by my professor into a new way of analysing meaning. With enough intelligence one can certainly argue for either side of arguments in epistemology without being brought to a point of yielding from opposition. I would tread carefully to say there is anything obvious about philosophy, such as i would tread even more carefully if i were to design a doctrine. It can be hard to anticipate every single counter argument.
Philosophy is just another way to control and label and correlate the masses.
That certainly isn't its universal intention, though it has been used as such in the past. Students of philosophy (and IMO, you always technically remain a student) are exercising the mind, trying to find new ways, new logic, new rationale. Like a lawyer convincing a judge of a loophole in the law that gets his defense off the charges, the philosopher tries to convince his audience of a logical inconsistency, heck he may outright lie if hes confident no-one will be able to exclusively prove him wrong on the spot.
Sure, people may become obsessed with a certain persons thinking and writings. And it does boil down to subjectivity. A considerably rational person may read a book authored by an absolute retard and be inspired by the inciteful lunacy. If you are well read, then you'll realise the diversity and how some people have actually come up with stuff you would struggle to put into words, you may also like to find ways to tear apart those words too.
Its just as much a game as it is a search for wisdom.
