Hey guys, Need an ID please
    #992270 - 10/25/02 12:45 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Okay

These were pretty white all over, had a fleshy ring near the top there was alittle brown spot on the top of the cap, and the gills where whitish, but had an amber brownish tint and some had a dimple on the very top. They were found in texas in a field where cows actively roam, oh yeah and were only about 3-4 inches tall. Thanks!

They also have a strong mushroom smell and do not turn blue when pinched, at least I think. The spore print is comming soon.

Interesting find. Im not sure on the ID, but I know that they are not Cubensis.

Were these growing directly from dung, or in the grass?

Please tell us the spore print and bruising if any.

Lastly, what is the overall feeling of the mushroom, is it slimy or sticky or smooth or what? Is there pink on the mushroom or is that the picture?

Actually growing in the grass, but it was in a field full of cows. But I've also just found some more growing were cows definately were not roaming so, manure didn't have anything to do with its growth.

Please tell us the spore print and bruising if any.
Well, still working spore print, There was no bruising, other than it getting darker like a brown

Lastly, what is the overall feeling of the mushroom, is it slimy or sticky or smooth or what? Is there pink on the mushroom or is that the picture?

It was pretty slimy and starchy, smooth on the cap.

I've just gotten some more shrooms, these look more like the ones I'd want to trip on. They were found in a completely different field and were growing directly from the cow dung. Take a look and see if you can ID it aswell?

here's the thing.
there are things to answer when posting, details that make all the difference between very sinilar species.  some folks here are very experience with panaeolus species, and might be able to tell you right away.  i, however, have very little pan knowledge.  i could help, though, if i knew some stuff.
the chances are only fair that those are active.  they dont look like the pan cyans i have seen, and if they be subbs, they be funny looking subbs.
these comments are about your second mushroom collection.
the first collection looks kinda like marasmius.  kinda fucked up lot, hunh?

give us a good description, pay attention to the gill edge, and try to distinguish between black, purple-black, and purply-brown.
read this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum3&Number=861390&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
and this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum3&Number=744922&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

hopefully the panaeolus experts will be along soon.
but remember, some people here will simply not reply to a post without adequate info, and you would be missing out on expert advice...

Im going to guess that they are Panaeolus papilionaceus, they are the closest description...I really dont know however.

The caps look like they have a black spore deposit on them. If they are Panaeolus papilionaceus, they aren not edible nor active....I believe. I can't remember if I have heard that they were mildly hallucinogenic or not. Better wait for another opinion.

Dont eat!

The white smaller mushroom resembles an inmature cyan, but, still the stem is quite thick.

Spore print is BLACK. And i read that Panaeolus papilionaceus doesn't even occur in texas? I got a list from Shroomery so I am assuming they are correct, only Panaelous it lists is the Panaeolus subbalteatus. Is that active?

EDIT, okay guys heres a closeup of the gills and alittle baby one too, hehe. THanks for the help

if they were subbs, the print would be purple brown.
black usually is panaeolus foeniseccii or panaeolus companulatus (which has now been clumped in with a "complex" known as "papilionaceus")
some collections show activity for both of these species. most however, are not active. being in tejas and all, i would think you might find cubes or cope cyans, none of those about?
seriously, i dont think any panaeolus are poisonous. as in, they probably wont kill you. i find it hard to take anyones advice on these things, though.
i have eaten what i believe to be pan foe's before with no effect (only three specimens tho)
do some reading on this.
peace

dammit, I can't get a picture on if i edit a post so let me try this

But nah, I must have the crappiest luck in the world when it comes to shrooms, I'm gonna go on a hunt in the morning and see if I can't find the ones I've been hunting down.

I believe you've got that reversed. Subs= black prints, foens= brown.

He's got something from the Panaeolus genus, but.. the thing about Panaeolus is that once they've been in the sun, they're damn near impossible to get a 100% identity on because the sun fades all the color and you're left with that dull brown/tan colored cap. There is a potential that the pans he found could be active. The only way to be sure is identify them with a microscope(spores) or eat them. None of the Panaeolus are poisonous, but they can be a little harsh on the stomach.
Eating them is up to you, if they're active, great, if not... expect a little bit of stomach upset(some minor aches, and diarrhea).

As far as the first ones(white gills) go, don't eat those, toss em'.

Hello texastrippist,

I would say that you have found Panaeolus papilionaceas.
-There is also one single Panaeolus antillarum in your collection.

Neither mushrooms are psychoactive.

Keep shroomin,

Oh and the mushrooms in the first photo do not look very appetizeing.
 No idea what they are,

Keep shroomin,
GG

Thanks for the ID, too bad they didn't have the desired effects, ah well fun learning experience. Care to ID these aswell? They were obviously under a tree, were hollow inside, didn't bruise any blues, the gills were brown didn't get a spore print, because I Didn't even pick these.

Those may be a type of Coprinus or Inky Cap as GumbyDude said.

Looks like you have some nice stomping grounds!

Thanks for sharing,
GG
