Life without death and pain?
    #991895 - 10/25/02 04:56 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

A question has been running through my head for some time now and I was hoping some of the members here could give their opinions.
If it became possible through technology to give people indefinate lifespans and virtually eliminate most forms of physical and mental pain what purpose would we give to our lives? Will time lose its meaning? Would we lose all ambition to further ourselves? Will we just become euphoric "zombies". Although this is a philosophical question it may become somewhat of a possibility in the future if one follows the converging trends in technological advancement.

I know that you stated, "...virtually eliminate most forms of physical and mental pain..." so you probably already are aware of what I am about to state. Pain is nature's way of telling you something is wrong. To live without a sensation of pain would increase the likelyhood of an early death or bodily injury. Someone else once said (William Blake?), "Without contrast there is no progression." I agree with this and think that without pain and pleasure, and the other contrasting states we would lose motivation and stagnate and probably become rather bored with our existence.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Somewhat off topic but that phase reminds me of regular ecstacy users...

If such technological advancement were to come about I believe individuals would find a way to deal with pain that worked for them, and devote their long lives to learning as much as possible.

Pain and pleasure are relative. In the good old days pain was getting eaten alive by a saber tooth tiger. Today its painful to stub your toe. Maybe in the future boredom will be experienced as pain because all we have to compare it to is absolute bliss. So even if we can eliminate forms of pain we feel now, the brain will always make the distinction between "good" and "bad" and make you feel the pleasure and pain accordingly.

That's emotional pain.
As long as we're in these bodies physical pain will always be there as a reminder of just what dimesnion we're in whether we want it to or not.

Why would anyone want to live forever? I for one would get bored of everything.

Few people want to die.

Perhaps the definition of death can be redefined. Death is currently the termination of all life processes in the body and brain. I believe most people would want to live indefinately. However, the difficult part for everyone is understanding what that life would be like. With the limitations of my current body and mind I would not want to live an eternity in bordom. Perhaps instead death should be redefined as a transformation of states, a breaking of the chains of limitation that currently hold our minds and bodies and moving on to other forms. I don't think I will ever be bored as long as there are questions that are unanswered. I just want more than a few decades to find the answers.

We would then become similar to the self-transforming machine elves.
