A Somerset cannabis grower caught by police after proudly posting pictures of his stash on YouTube has been ordered to pay £275 by magistrates.
Shane Burfield, 25, uploaded video footage of his £500 cannabis plant over six months on the website alongside his name, date of birth and home town.

Police raided his flat in Bridgwater after seeing the clips following an anonymous tip off.

They found a 5ft high plant with a street value of around £500 and specialist hydroponics equipment to maximise heat and light conditions in his bedroom.

Burfield pleaded guilty to cultivation and possession of cannabis at Sedgemoor Magistrates' Court in Bridgwater and was fined £200 and ordered to pay £75 costs.

When questioned by police he said he started growing and filming the plant in November 2008 and was to begin harvesting it three weeks after the police raid. He claimed it was intended for personal use and not for sale.

He said he put the videos on YouTube to document the plant's growth and to show other growers his crop, which he called a hobby.

PC Adrian Peck of Avon and Somerset Police said at the time of his arrest: "The male had been videoing the growth of the plant over a number of months and uploading his horticultural endeavours on to the site to document it - providing us with fairly conclusive evidence.

"The cultivation of cannabis is illegal.

"If you break the law and are foolish enough to then advertise your criminal activities on the internet, it makes it very easy for the police to catch you."
