Best method for confirming Agaricus arvensis?
    #9904881 - 03/03/09 05:10 PM (15 years, 1 day ago)

All this rain has the local mycological environment popping again in the East Bay of rainy California. Low and behold I find in a clean and undisturbed abundance of what I believe to be Agaricus arvensis. What is the best method for confirming them aside from micro analysis? I definitely don't want to confuse them with some of their toxic cousins such as Agaricus xanthodermus or Agaricus californicus. Any pointers from people with hands on experience with this mushroom in my locale would be greatly appreciated. The camera is charging so I wouldn't be able to provide pictures until tomorrow.

Thanks in advance!

We'll see if I got this right.

I think you can tell A. arvensis because of it's sweet smell and cog wheeled annulus.Agaricus californicus doesn't really have much of a smell.

Agaricus xanthodermus will have pretty profound yellowing in the base area particularly. And a shitty smell.

Spot on, also A. californicus stains yellow while being cooked.  He needs to watch out for that one.  It's everywhere.

Yea, but a lot of species have that.  The A. albolutescens I have been eating has a nice cogwheel.  Some of the species with a cogwheel veil are toxic.  I've been paying more attention to Agaricus lately.  I notice that 100% of the ones I find in the city are A. xanthodermus and all the good ones I find out in the woods.

The best way to tell if an Agaricus is edible is to check the smell.  All the bad ones smell like ink.

If it stains red its good to eat unless its A. praeclaresquamosus.

Some people are scared of the yellow staining ones, but 95% of the edible Agaricus I come across stain yellow.

And me.  I smelled a Agaricus xanthodermus back in '88 and  :wetself: cuz I almost ate it. At that time I thought all Agaricus were ok to eat because I'd never run into that section before.

That was a close call.  :twitchy:
