Thanks Alan for the heads up, this is what I saw there:
someone stepped on the little guy but ill use him to make spawn
and a nice lepista nuda specimen from my original patch
the lady has never tried a morel, i think im gonna fry the big one up tonight halved with some garlic butter, and sprinkled lightly with parmesian.

You got that right. I always tell myself I won't find any. That way it's an extra surprise when I do and not a serious disappointment if I don't. I can always say, "See? I knew I wasn't going to find any this year." That's one mushroom I never count on finding. They just don't grow much around here.

yup, plenty of snow up high still. mostly melted out down low where they pop up first, but temps aren't where they need to be, and wont be for a while yet... arctic air coming down from canada this weekend too, gonna be extra cold .
I'm usually finding a few by mid-april though, and follow them up into the mountains until june or so. can't wait, I guess I'll live vicariously through the hunting forum and try to conceal my jealousy until then ...

Grrr I hate you right now, I still have at least 3-4 weeks to go before it will even be worth looking....
Seriously though, good job. I'm just jealous.

im in the north valley, near chico. the fungus life here is very slim, though chico has always been good to me with the morels, me and some buddies found some during the summer here when it was like 117deg outside all clustered on woodchips and shriveling up.
still, not much up here, i cant wait to move.

I know, I know. But there are several considerations that keep me from doing that. First of all, I hate competition, and that applies to all areas of life. I'm not a competitor, nor will I ever be. I'm not made that way. That flows out of some fairness doctrine deep in the core of my being. (sorry to get a little philosophical here) Going down there means oddles of competition. I'll get even more specific, head to Wayne National Forest. Hell, everybody else does. And that's exactly why you won't find me there. I don't hunt where other hunters hunt because I don't do competition, ever.
Aside from the fact it is hours away from me.
I do plan on venturing out of my normal territory this year though. Last year when I was hunting for chanterelles I came across this sweet spot perfect for morels. It's hilly, gets tons of rain and has plenty of humus. If they're going to fruit this year, they will fruit there. I don't know if anyone else has figured this spot out yet but I'm going to take the chance that no one has. If so, I might be able to harvest 40 or 50 pounds. Wish me luck.

Luck Wished.
I know what your saying, I forgot that a bunch of people go there. I went in a downpour last year, I guess it deterred a few people.
Also, I was told there was an old growth in a part of Cook's Forest. It just seems kind of unlikely do you know anything about it?
