I know that everyone is sick of Newbies, BUT??
    #990317 - 10/24/02 04:54 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I just want to assure everyone that I have tried to find the answer to my question in the FAQ before posting on here; If I missed it somewhere in the FAQ I am sorry. I just didn?t want to seem like a Newbie dumbass. Well I first started using the The Magic Mushroom Growers Guide. Now I?ve been working on the Terainanium (spelling). Here is a Picture of my set up and I was wondering about an air exchange system. I am using a pitcher with Perlite / H202 to get proper Humidification and some new and much needed air into the chamber, and I have a misty mate to provide fresh clean water to the sides for more humidification, and I know to be careful not to have too much? How about getting air OUT, for the correct air exchange so that it doesn?t build up too much CO2. I was thinking of running another fish tank pump with just a hose through my fish tank and punching holes in the tubing so that new air gets in and old air gets out? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thats what I have done. This will not recirculate all the air though.. so without a doubt you will still have to fan... unless you're using one of those really big expensive ones. Makes sure you filter the air that comes in, also put some sort of filtration over the outlet holes.

If you can get filter media of some sort, you can take off the rubber bottom of the pump and put the filter over it in order to filter the air coming in. For the air going out, you can either cut out a few small holes and cover them with filter media, or you can use fish tank tubing with a check valve so that air can only go out...you would need to have a pretty well sealed terrarium for that to work though.

ARRGGG... I highly DONT recommend using cakes. It produces significantly less frutis and is considerably HARDER in my opinion. PLEASE do yourself a favor and case!

Ok, why would a sufficient amount of CO2 not find its way out?
If the system lets air in, and that air mixes with the air already in there, why then would the air that is obviously coming out to make room for the new air, not carry with it enough of the CO2? Its not like CO2 molecules are abnormally large. I just don't get it. If fresh air in, then dead/fresh out. Problem solved.

Cakes have their advantages, but I agree that casings aren't too difficult, even for a newb, just do like everyone always advises, do some cakes and do some casings.

Well, it seems like it would be all that simple but its not. Depending on how much air flow you have going in and where the air is directed, will yield in different amound of exchange. In the worst case scenerio one might be pumping fresh air in and pumping it right back out again, while the CO2 is collecting at the bottom.

ExtravagantDream

Why would it collect at the bottom? Is co2 heavy or is it because the entry point of the fresh air is near the top (or, no offense, is it because this is a personal theory)? If so, then shouldn't placing the entry point of fresh air at the bottom of the terrarium fix this by mixing old and new and pushing it all to the top and out?

yes CO2 is heavier. I was just simply stating the worst case scenerio. Most ppl, even when not thinking about it, would probably end up having something that mixes the two. Mixing the two doesnt get rid of just one however, but it can definately help reduce the levels of CO2 build up. Unfortunately, since CO2 is heavier, it will be harder to move then oxygen, so you'll probably end up pushing out more oxygen then CO2 no matter what.

Doh!  Of course CO2 is heavier than O2.  My bad on that one.

Hows about this, the tube ends lay amongst the bases of the cakes.  Shouldn't this provide direct fresh air to the cakes?

Not in a "semi "hermetic atmosphere . Meaning closed or sealed , having a lid that seals and no holes in bottom . C02 has no way to escape , unless you provide it a doorway i.e. fanning or holes in bottom of chamber .

As you can tell from all my previous ?s in this thread, I was trying to figure out how to get away with not fanning.  What you saw was my insane reaction and its resulting cathartic release.  Thinking of touching the mammies made it easier to accept.

And I would also like to sincerely apologize to dscokeman for abusing his thread.  That was rather inconsiderate of me.

To not have to fan .........
C02 sensor hooked up to a fan that comes on at set point 1000ppm etc....
a filtered place for C02 to escape , preferably on bottom of chamber or sides near the bottom .

Titty twisters always wake me up !

First to NoVestal
"And I would also like to sincerely apologize to dscokeman for abusing his thread. That was rather inconsiderate of me."

NO PROBLEM, I appreciate all of the information that comes across on the thread, I am trying to absorb as much info as possible about the process. I love information. And I have to tell you that the exchange between you and tripndicular and ExtravagantDream about CO2 escaping I was very interested in the conversation. So I want to thank all 3 of you.

Now to Skikid16
?Cakes have their advantages, but I agree that casings aren't too difficult, even for a newb, just do like everyone always advises, do some cakes and do some casings. ?

I have always heard that if Newbs should go cakes first no matter what, I tried a Case but I was pretty stupid about the whole thing and didn?t put it in a controlled environment.

What is everyone Fave TEK for NEWBIE CASES???

Last and certainly not least to tripndicular
?To not have to fan .........
C02 sensor hooked up to a fan that comes on at set point 1000ppm etc....
a filtered place for C02 to escape , preferably on bottom of chamber or sides near the bottom .?
How do I achieve this????? I am very interesting in this it sounds like it would cost a little or if you hook up some computer fans to the CO2 sensor and thing provided a filter for it, Any ideas on this would be wonderful

The cool mist is hooked to a timer to come on for ten minutes six times each day. Humidification and air exchange.
