coir question
    #9898537 - 03/02/09 08:10 PM (12 years, 7 days ago)

what would grow on coir? What supplements would you add? Would you pasteurize or sterilize? Thanks

I've seen oysters grown on coir. I bet you could also do Agrocybe aegerita, Pleurotus eryngii, Hypsizygus tessulatus and there are probably others. If I were to do it I would pasteurize in a bucket like large_dose does and mix the coir 50/50 with straw and supplement with 15% gypsum. I would make my spawn using WBS with bran and gypsum so I wouldn't have to worry about contams coming in on the bran.

I haven't ever done it before but I'm sure it would work.

I tried spawning oyster grain to coir once and it would not colonize the coir.  I had no other supplements.

I just finished up with two mono-tubs using coir, and it worked fine. I added worm castings, and then pasteurized it. It was spawned with WBS. One thing I did notice was that it looks like it isn't 100% colonized as you would interpret it from most pics found here, but you'll be able to figure it out. It takes a little longer to colonize, but you will get good results. I would also recommend adding a lot of nutrients if potency is the issue.

One more thing. The coir drys out pretty fast, so use an H2O2 solution, and keep the humidity up.

He's talking about growing edibles on coir.

He most likely grew cubes. Coir seems to get some pretty nice results from what I've seen in the grow log forum. I've heard that Reishi will eat just about anything so that might be an option. Donno for sure though. Maybe king oyster? I am willing to bet if you supplement the coir with either sawdust or woodchips and straw you can grow just about any edible on it.

already cooked and sealed....too late to add wood.
I'll try the lion's mane, it's really really strong.
Even eats Tyvek!

I've used "used" planted coir with coffee grounds to grow oysters in pillow type bags. Worked OK.

I saw some large coir bricks for sale at a nursery over the weekend being sold as mulch, and it was fairly cheap.  (Not as cheap as hardwood mulch, which was going for $1/cubic foot.)  I wonder if king stropharia would work.  The spawn smells a hell of a lot like cubensis spawn.

Actually you would be surprised how big those brick's actually are after you get them full of moisture. I think I used about 3 bricks for 2 tubs.

I've had great results with king oysters on coir.

Mediocre results with piopinos, white elms, pink oysters.

I've had no luck with Reishi on coir-it never fully colonizes for some reason.
