This has been known for some time in programming circles, but now it's out in the open, if you are running XP you should know about it.

Someone can, merely by sending you an email, delete ALL the files on your computer. You don't have to open an attachment, or run a file - it's done by HTML - it can also be done by a simple web page as well.

The fix is to install the SP1 update for XP - but there is a catch there as well! If you 'borrowed' yer copy of XP, like from Kazaa or someplace similar, then SP1 will KNOW you have a pirated copy. Apparently, there were only a few copies of the full XP installation that got out, and onto the net, and they were corporate versions that didn't require activation. The SP1 upgrade checks to see if you have a corporate version - if so, it won't upgrade, and will in fact attempt to let MS know your IP, and possible personal info off of your computer. Since this only affects pirated copies, they can't be said to be infringing your rights.

So - if you have XP, either apply the SP1 upgrade, but a new copy if yours is pirated, or install another operating system. I guarantee you that within 10 days anyone who hasn't applied the fix, and still surfs the net, will have all their files deleted.

I guarantee it! Right now, there are 10,000 script kiddies and wannabe hackers that are taking less than a minute to put together the malicious code that will do this, and are putting it on web-sites, and in emails.

On boards like this - many Admins allow HTML in signatures, so a twisted mind could even put it in their sig line...

Immediately afterwards, get off the net, until you have either installed the SP1 update, or changed operating systems.

If you are NOT running XP, congratulations - yer gonna be OK!
