preserving grain for later use.??
    #989441 - 10/24/02 01:44 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hello all.

quick question... is it possible to pressure cook millet and use a regular lid with gumy part down to seal them for good? so this way i can prepare a bunch and use them as need be?

I need to borrow a pressure cooker and to prevent having to re-borrow it ,i'd like to prepare a bunch ahead of time.

any ideas?

With the lid down, you would end up vaccum canning them. When you punched a hole in the lid (or opened them) later, it would suck in air via that vaccum. If you & they were not in a sterile "clean room" enviroment, or working under a flow hood when that happens. Odds are that crud in the unfiltered air would contam the jars.

I considered this..

i figure remove the ring, wipe the whole thing down with alcohol, heat up the oven a la oven tek, an pop the lid, quickly replace it with a steril pierced lid and voila!

the main concern is will the grain still be viable and shakable.???

IMHO, oven tek is BS.

Just take a lit josh stick of incense & place it in a hot oven. & see where the smoke goes & the air comes from that makes it go.

Hot air rises, drawing from cold air beneith it. In other words, hot air leaves & otherr air rushs in. That cooler air would come off the kitchen floor area.

Anno posted some pics that verify that.

I would assume if you vaccum canned sterilized grain or seed in a jar. It would stay sterile, until opened. But, having never done it. Hell if I know?

i do it all the time. 6t is correct, but then we take this chances all the time, i mean us, "poor boys without a hepa". so pc the jars and do the best to maintain clean environment. i then wrap them in saranwrap (to keep moisture in and contams out)and keep them in the freezer. contam rate is no higher than usual
