Who here makes music on their computer (as a hobbyist)? Late night collab?

Insomnia has entered my life and now I don't sleep until the wee hours of the morning. So I'm usually making some late night musical sketches until the wee hours of the morning or listening to music.
If you are in the same boat, post in this thread. I know a little music theory, but I am going to be studying in-depth soon enough (it's about fucking time) and I will brush up on mixing and mastering as well. I'm good with coming with ideas by ear though, like Phil Collins...
These days, there are plenty of methods for two people on the internet to collab with each other. Especially if you have high speed internet. It's 2009, let's be serious here.
I would classify myself as a composer. I don't specialize in anything but composing songs. Who's down? Maybe if we create something good we can post it to the Shroomery and eventually come up with some kind of mix called Late Night Jams? Kind of ambitious, but hey, who knows.

I've played around with it but don't particularly enjoy it. Here's a little diddy.

Yeah I'm a percussionist, but I have a tenori-on and a m-audio keystation (I know piano alright, I'm alot better at vibraphones) for digital stuff. I also have some mics, but it'd be a bitch to get a live stream of well mic'd drums with my current setup.

What do you have in mind, I'm a decent guitarist, but I don't have any recording equipment set up.

If either of you is bored enough to partner up on AIM or whatever, we can do that. Just PM me. No, this is not starting a band. But I would enjoy bouncing musical ideas back and forth, then boiling it down to a more polished product and making an actual song. For instance, I'd start with a drum idea and send that to you, you'd add to it or play another instrument on top and send it to me. Like tennis. After we had the foundation down, I guess we could work on tweaking the sounds and mixing better, etc.
But I'm sure there are some sites / programs out there that let you do this way way way more interactively in near real-time. Then you can take the finished product from that and render it with more high-quality instruments.
I'm semi-serious about this because insomnia produces an ungodly level of understimulation and I feel really productive right now.

Well, I was writing that last post while you posted, but that should give you a good idea. If you know how to compose a song without the need for a guitar and have good ideas, then we can collaborate. It's extremely easy to get high quality Digital Audio Workstations and Sequencers these days. Just a few minutes of downloading (and you don't even have to pirate, the amount of freeware stuff is staggering).

I play bass guitar, and I've been thinking a lot lately about picking up a MIDI keyboard to help fill in some gaps in my playing with a guitar player.
You guys have any recommendations on something to pick up? I've messed with composing music on the computer, but it seems like too big of a hassle without a keyboard.
I think this is a cool idea, and it'd be cool to see it work out. If you guys want I could probably finagle some grooves in behind things.

I'd recommend something with some knobs and/or sliders built-in. Very useful.

If you're playing live shows then the knobs and such are a must, but if not then they aren't as need. The m-audio 61es is pretty sweet, I use it. microKorg's rock for synth/midi, and the m-audio axiom is a pretty sweet midi controller for the price.
Some things I want to buy though: Kaossilator KP3 Kaoss pad

I'm going to bed, but I got two PMs so far and I had a really long conversation with a member here. Something is going down, ladies and gentlemen. Of course this won't all happen in a day. Should be interesting as time goes on. Especially since I'm studying music theory and will only get better.
Time to get some well-deserved sleep! I hope my 3g of Standardized 20x come in tomorrow!!!!!!
