The Documentary thread
    #9890211 - 03/01/09 01:18 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I just watched those videos Ego Death posted about 'The Dolphin Kid' and I gotta say it was awesome.

Now I'm in the mood to watch some more random documentaries, so here we go:

The Documentary Thread

Quote:

The Union Movie:

Follow filmmaker Adam Scorgie as he dives head first into Canada's most
socially acceptable illegal activity. Along the way, Adam demsytifies the
underground market and brings to light how such a large industry can
function while remaining illegal. By interviewing experts from around the
globe, including growers, clippers, police officers, criminalogists, economists,
psychologists, medical doctors, politicians and pop culture icons, Scorgie
explores the cause and effect nature of the business behind getting high.

Extraordinary People - The boy who sees without eyes:

This is a documentary about a boy (Ben Underwood) who has taught himself to use echo location to navigate around the world. Ben Underwood is blind, but has managed to do some truly extraordinary feats.

Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land: Media & the Israel-Palestine Conflict:

Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land provides a striking comparison of U.S. and international media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how structural distortions in U.S. coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This pivotal documentary exposes how the foreign policy interests of American political elites--oil, and a need to have a secure military base in the region, among others--work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to exercise a powerful influence over how news from the region is reported

Money as Debt:

Paul Grignon's 47-minute animated presentation of "Money as Debt" tells in very simple and effective graphic terms what money is and how it is being created. It is an entertaining way to get the message out. The Cowichan Citizens Coalition and its "Duncan Initiative" received high praise from those who previewed it. I recommend it as a painless but hard-hitting educational tool and encourage the widest distribution and use by all groups concerned with the present unsustainable monetary system in Canada and the United States.

Waste=Food:

An inspiring documentary on the Cradle to Cradle design concept of the chemist Michael Braungart and the architect William McDonough. Winner of the Silver Dragon at the Beijing International Science Film Festival 2006. OUTLINE: Man is the only creature that produces landfills. Natural resources are being depleted on a rapid scale while production and consumption are rising in nations like China and India. The waste production world wide is enormous and if we do not do anything we will soon have turned all our resources into one big messy landfill. But there is hope. The German chemist, Michael Braungart, and the American designer-architect William McDonough are fundamentally changing the way we produce and build. If waste would become food for the biosphere or the technosphere (all the technical products we make), production and consumption could become beneficial for the planet. A design and production concept that they call Cradle to Cradle. A concept that is seen as the next industrial revolution. • Design every product in such a way that at the end of its lifecycle the component materials become a new resource. • Design buildings in such a way that they produce energy and become a friend to the environment. Large companies like Ford and Nike are working with McDonough and Braungart to change their production facilities and their products. They realize that economically seen waste is destruction of capital. You make something with no value. Based on their ideas the Chinese government is working towards a circular economy where Waste = Food.

Add any videos or links you have to the thread and I'll update the post, so hopefully we can have a big ole list of documentaries the shroomery recommends .

I forgot to say; it can be a documentary on any topic, there is no theme here .

I just had an idea; if you add a documentary to this thread, attach a poll like this one so that we can 'peer review' each documentary :yesnod:.

Money as Debt

A great documentary about our monetary system.  It explains it in simple, easy to understand terms, and avoids the conspiracy theories of Zeitgeist.

SNUFF

A challenge to whether its an urban legend or not. Excellent documentary but not for the weak stomached. Very hard hitting and makes you even more aware of  the evil that  lurks among us. I typically am not  easily disturbed but this one left me reeling. Mark L. Rosen was the highlight of the film and a plethora of knowledge on the topic. I had to watch it in two separate sittings and it still disrupted my sleep.

I recently watched the Union the business behind getting high documentary.  I though it was awesome and recommend it to all.  It covers some great points about marijuana, drug laws, and legalization.  One of the most shocking things to me is that if your caught with one joint you loose financial aid for college in the US.  However if you commit a violent crime such as rape or armed robbery, the government has no problem financing your higher education.

necro-post but a good one!

here is a few for the more artistic out there:

Art of the Steal:
This is one of my favorite movies of 2010. (ive seen more than 200 films this year and ive got 3.5 months left to go)
Quote:

via Netflix:
A gripping tale of intrigue and mystery in the art world, this film traces the history of the Barnes collection of Post-Impressionist paintings, which was worth billions and became the subject of a power struggle after the 1951 death of the owner. Dr. Albert Barnes collected 181 Renoirs, 69 Cézannes, 59 Matisses, 46 Picassos and many other valuable paintings. But the political wrangling over the collection eventually led to its division.

Objectified:
Quote:

via Netflix:
Discover how manufactured objects that surround us such as cars, phones and chairs influence our daily lives with this revealing documentary, which features top industrial designers discussing their creative processes and professional objectives. Director Gary Hustwit (Helvetica) explores not only how objects get made, but also why they make us feel the way they do and how they can make our world better.

Helvetica:
Quote:

via Netflix:
We use it every day on our computers, we see it on street signs -- and we take it for granted. Now, Gary Hustwit's unique documentary introduces us to Helvetica, a font whose readability has made it the most popular in the world. Interviews with designers and artists offer insight into the development, use and universal acceptance of Helvetica as the typeface of choice for everything from writing letters to creating corporate logos.
