whats in the soil, some store bought soil is pretty much just peatmoss and verm anyhow and that would work fine, but I dont know about just plain old dirt never tired it.

hum that isn't the best mix I could think of but I don't see any perceivable problems.... but once again I have never done it.  as far as how wet your top layer is you never want it soaked but you might have to keep up on it (perlite dose not hold water well) . BTW not sure I understood your question about next to soaking in water so I just guessed

You do not want perlite in your casing mix. The casing is meant to retain water. Perlite is hydrophobic and would be counter productive. I'm sure in a pinch, your soil mix would work somewhat, but you really should try to acquire the proper materials.

from what i hear soil gets contaminated more easily then other growing mediums. it most likely would be a disaster, especially if you use an already contaminated jar.

First try was with soil. Major green. Never again. If you do try to use it might help if you sterilize it, at least in the micowave.
