I innoculated on the 22th of September, its now October 24! The other jars still have about 7-10 days left before they are fully colonized. Im gonna let the one jar sit another 3 days just to be safe and make sure it colonizes the center as well. heres some questions:
1. I might have a hard time removing the cake from the jar. Can I scrape some of the mycellum with a sterile knife in order to remove the cake?
2. Do I put the pieces of mycellum I scraped back on the cake and let it become one again or throw it away and let the remaining 80% of the cake pin?
3. How long do I dunk, 12 hours sounds like a long time. Do I totally submerge the cake or just insert it in an inch of well water?
4. how much perlite to use? an inch?
5. Will a rubbermaid food container do? The long, rectangular one with a plastic lid? I have two of them but they arent high enough to allow sufficient room.
6. Must I need light or can I let them grow in the dark? If I need light, will leaving it in the storage room with the ceiling lights on 8 hours a day work?
7. any other stuff I should do?

More questions: my fridge might be 32 degrees, I sometimes see a bit of ice accumulating on the metal shelves. Might be too cold. How does dunking in cold water and letting it sit in a dark place sound? The water should remain cool for the overnight dunk

Alright bro.
I wasn't gonna let you in on this, but since it sounds like you managed to pull off your little experiment you may be worth sharin the real info wit.
There's a section on the Shroomery, it doesn't get alot of attention, it's pretty well hid so most people can't find it. But it has way more info than the faq does and it can break this stuff down for ya real clear.

Don't use too much water. Use a 1.5 - 2 inch layer of perlite and no more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water. People seem to make the mistake of adding too much water which doesn't leave enough exposed perlite surface area.
LSAuser, I found that in the FAQ .Try using your eyes next time.

1) Yes.
2) Throw away the scraps.
5) It's not ideal, but it will work. Any shrooms hitting the lid will bend.
6) It will work fine if you leave them in the storage room.
7) Use some common sense and stop chasing fat chicks.

I'm not an expert or anything, but I'd be more than happy to offer my .02 cents if he tried to find those answers. He's asking if he can use a rubbermaid for a terrarium,come on now,that's retarded.There's even numerous pictures in the growlog with people using rubbermaids.He can LITERALLY find all those answers in under ten minutes.I have not been harsh on him,hell I'm surprised Anno or Moe hasn't come here and replied "read the FAQ"

2. good idea. I could try to case the pieces or put them in jars but ill probably get contams. Not worth the time. Ill just dump em in the trash

Woah woah woah, I feel a flame war starting. Trip has contributed alot. But it pisses me off when people get off on just bashing people. I can see both sides, but for the sake of good nature, lets all try to be helpful, hell maybe if we all help him a little, he'll learn something and not so many duh questions.
Oh yeah, LSA, lights from your room will be fine, the lights are just needed as a directional, nothing more, people have used small LED lights and have had success, so yes, the ones on you ceiling will be fine. Good Luck, and do yourself a huge favor, start reading before you post every question that comes to mind. You'll get less flames and learn more.

i love the previous post, the one about using wood in your substrate....
i think im going to start using stones from my backyard in my substrate, cuz mushrooms grow near stones..... and stones remind the mushrooms of their natural habitat... and if the mushrooms think they are in their natural habitat, they will grow more naturally...
it all makes perfect sense....
seriously tho LSA just read what everyone else does, and copy to the best of your ability.... some corners can be cut or modified, and some cannot...
just use a little common sense and u will see which is which...
i can understand your being hesitant, its your 1st grow and all.. im actually in the same boat you are in....
but alot of the questions you ask can be answered just by thinking about it for 10 seconds... if the rubbermaid is not deep enuff... buy a new one!
