Finally after 30 days, one jar is 100% colonized!
    #987781 - 10/23/02 10:43 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I innoculated on the 22th of September, its now October 24! The other jars still have about 7-10 days left before they are fully colonized. Im gonna let the one jar sit another 3 days just to be safe and make sure it colonizes the center as well. heres some questions:

1. I might have a hard time removing the cake from the jar. Can I scrape some of the mycellum with a sterile knife in order to remove the cake?

2. Do I put the pieces of mycellum I scraped back on the cake and let it become one again or throw it away and let the remaining 80% of the cake pin?

3. How long do I dunk, 12 hours sounds like a long time. Do I totally submerge the cake or just insert it in an inch of well water?

4. how much perlite to use? an inch?

5. Will a rubbermaid food container do? The long, rectangular one with a plastic lid? I have two of them but they arent high enough to allow sufficient room.

6. Must I need light or can I let them grow in the dark? If I need light, will leaving it in the storage room with the ceiling lights on 8 hours a day work?

7. any other stuff I should do?

thanks

"Temperature during the dunking should be cold, or as cool as possible and still above freezing.
Time spent dunking should be not less than 6 hours for minimal benefits. 12 hours is about right for dunking in between flushes and at birth but 24 hours is the maximum for full rehydration of nearly spent cakes."

More questions: my fridge might be 32 degrees, I sometimes see a bit of ice accumulating on the metal shelves. Might be too cold. How does dunking in cold water and letting it sit in a dark place sound? The water should remain cool for the overnight dunk

"Probably the easiest way is using a layer of moist perlite at the bottom of the fruiting chamber along with manual fanning several times a day."

It doesnt mention how deep a layer! also how moist? I heard you fill it so the water line covers half of the perlite.

"in a sealed terrarium"

It doesnt specify what type. Can I use a plastic rubbermade food container for that?

"A mushroom is best harvested by being pulled off the casing or cake with a twisting motion.
Don?t use a knive or scissors"

I was thinking of using a knife, but what about the issues of blue bruising?

No matter how often we read the FAQ, we will still have questions. by we, this means many shroomery members.

Alright bro.
I wasn't gonna let you in on this, but since it sounds like you managed to pull off your little experiment you may be worth sharin the real info wit.
There's a section on the Shroomery, it doesn't get alot of attention, it's pretty well hid so most people can't find it. But it has way more info than the faq does and it can break this stuff down for ya real clear.
So here ya go, and remember who hooked ya up.

read this

In reply to:

Don't use too much water. Use a 1.5 - 2 inch layer of perlite and no more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water. People seem to make the mistake of adding too much water which doesn't leave enough exposed perlite surface area.

LSAuser, I found that in the FAQ .Try using your eyes next time.

This is the problem, this guy LSAuser has been on these forums for about two months now and the answers to his questions have been in front of his face the whole damn time. He gets a lot of shit around here, sometimes more than he needs to IMO, but hey he brings alot of it on himself.

1. I might have a hard time removing the cake from the jar. Can I scrape some of the mycellum with a sterile knife in order to remove the cake? *not answered*

2. Do I put the pieces of mycellum I scraped back on the cake and let it become one again or throw it away and let the remaining 80% of the cake pin? *not answered*

3. How long do I dunk, 12 hours sounds like a long time. Do I totally submerge the cake or just insert it in an inch of well water? *answer found, 12 hours, full submersion*

4. how much perlite to use? an inch?
*answer found, use 1.5-2*

5. Will a rubbermaid food container do? The long, rectangular one with a plastic lid? I have two of them but they arent high enough to allow sufficient room.
*answer not found*

6. Must I need light or can I let them grow in the dark? If I need light, will leaving it in the storage room with the ceiling lights on 8 hours a day work?
*it just says use light for direction but doesnt mention anything else*

7. any other stuff I should do?

1) Yes.
2) Throw away the scraps.
5) It's not ideal, but it will work.  Any shrooms hitting the lid will bend.
6) It will work fine if you leave them in the storage room.
7) Use some common sense and stop chasing fat chicks.
