I've had my first flush with tha casing, I'll post some pics very very soon!
I've picked the shrooms up as they had already opened, and I put them on a grill with some salt under it. Do they need to stay away from light? I don't want them to lose any potency.
And I'm going to put the casing in water for 8 hours for the 2nd flush, is that OK? I don't need bottle water do I?

I always dry mine with a dehydrator @125f for 6-8 hours usually does the trick.
As for the dunking, yeah that's fine and no, tap water is fine. I personally use mineral water (well water! :-D) with good results.
Make sure you drain it well before putting it back into fruiting. Let it drip dry for a good 30 minutes or so.

Salt as your drying agent? Ive never heard of that. Light will be ok as long as the mushrooms arent in direct intense sunlight. Any loss in potency would be unnoticeable. My fav way of drying would be a fan. I dont know how well the salt will work...
For the dunk you could use distilled water if you so desire, but it probably isnt totally necessary.

Salt is supposed to absorb moisture.
I use tap water to dunk.

I did quite a mess dunking the substrate, it broke up in two parts. Now they're both in fresh water though.
And I've already used salt as a drying agent, it worked quite well. I may add a fan next to them anyway...

wow. i wouldnt have suspected salt to actually achieve cracker dry, but sweet! Learn something new everyday.

havent you ever seen rice/crackers in salt shakers anywhere?
because salt absorbs moisture, dont know if its better than kitty liter/silica gel or damp-rid, but it will work.
yeah, a fan would deff speed things up in drying.

a lot of restaurants do it to avoid clumping and the shaker holes getting clogged. just some FYI. lol I had to refill a lot of shakers back in the day working a buffet. lmao.

probably a better quality one. lol
a lot I would go to change the shakers and the rice/crackers were moldy. add moisture to a grain and watch the mold grow. it happened to the crackers more often. I avoid almost anything in a shaker since then when I go out to eat. mold. none to appealing.

I have one question for the substrate which is dunking at the moment. I know cakes need 24 hours, bulk substrates need just some hours...
I have a casing... (broke the cake in many pieces and covered with a casing layer)...
so how long should it dunk?
