Painful? That can't be right, I've handled hundreds of them, and never been bitten.
I just read that some people can have an allergic reaction, perhaps that's what you're referring to.

Yeah, I got stinging sensations from them when they stayed on me longer than like 30 seconds. I was admiring one and all of a sudden it started stinging bad enough to flick it, I was really surprised. Then I remembered I don't think I'd had one on my arm,just a finger and let if fly away, home. Seriously, I did feel like it stung me.

WOw, and here I Was thinking it was lady bugs and it could be the asian ones. Thanks for posting that.
Now I see that lady bugs are PURE Bright RED- and the Asian ones can be reddish but not pure red.
