Who has read the Death of Ivan Illich?

I was astounded how much I related to this story. This sounds like my internal dialogue now just about every time I trip. (except for the three days of screaming)

I've read it, and loved it as I recall, though I couldn't say why. I read it over the same summer that I read a number of classics, including 1984.
-------------------- “Strengthened by contemplation and study, I will not fear my passions like a coward. My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Some similarities:
- Can't get away from It - Looking back at life and evaluating all decisions. Deciding life was lived wrongly but no way to fix it - Feeling that something is just "off" and need to align, like his loose kidney - I usually get really nauseous so I relate to the pain in his side...another "it" that cannot be escaped - Contempt for the "TV set" behavior around me - insincerity - a light in the rupture of the narrow, dark black sack that nevertheless does not change the situation
I'm not really a morose person, this just happens to me every time.

Yeah, I thought it was awesome too. Very zen actually.

You're not alone.
Many of us seem full of this self absorbed non-sense.
I suggest you take your next trip way the fuck back in the wilderness in a place you are totally unfamiliar with and far from other humans and at night. (don't forget to take a substantial dose) Things might fall into perspective then.

Yea, I really like Leo Tolstoy
I had to read Death of Ivan Ilyich for a class, and I liked it so much I went out and bought a whole collection of his short stories.
I think alot of psychedelic users go through an eye opening "illness", even death. What is illness really? Are mushrooms or LSD a kind of medicine? This is the only way I have been able to reconcile them with the world.
Anyways, alot of late 19th and early 20th century western writers had something really interesting to say about the mind and body, something that we have to a great extent forgotten since the field of health; the mind and body has been completely scientificized.
PS if you are looking for something similar Fyodor Dostoyevsky was another Russian writer from the same period, with a very similar, existential outlook.

I did this with a friend last time and then I told him I was just gonna sleep where I was in the dirt, but he wouldn't leave me alone. However I will keep experimenting.

Noted. I'm pretty hard to derail from my own reading list but I always keep stuff in mind.

The last book I finished was Exit Strategy by Douglas Rushkoff. (Great novel)
I'm juggling the Hero Within by Carol S. Pearson (it's about 4 Jungian archetypes: Orphan, Wanderer, Hero, and Magician) and Get Back in The Box also by Douglas Rushkoff (it's about business).
I just picked up Steppenwolf because I need stories and I love Herman Hesse.

Kidding?
It's a fictional story with no resemblance to the philosopher. But yeah, he's dead.
