    #985467 - 10/23/02 12:37 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

i've planted some mushrooms, but they are really small and are starting to open. The tallest one is about an inch tall. What's up with this?

Here's The Specs.

You use a too thin substrate layer, and a too thick casing layer.

Oh, and it?s terraRium.

Anno is right on here. With only a couple of cm of substrate, you don't want more than a few mm of casing.

can i correct this? the first flush is already coming in. If i removed some casing, would they grow big witht the thin substrate layer?

also, i have a B+ casing that has just barely started coming to the surface. it has a 1" substrate layer and 1/2" casing layer, should i thin out the casing layer?

I wouldn't mess with either for now. Next time, try about a 1/4" for the casing layer. Just keep it moist. If you're expecting exceptional, large mushrooms, go with larger trays and more bulk.

Peace

I would probably go about 1/2" or so for that one.  I usually go lighter on the casing as you can see..

Peace

alright, nother question, the straw itself is like a hill. 3" in the center and about 2 1/4 in the sides. should i break the straw and even it out, or should i just put 1/2 casing layer over the while thing?

I would say break it up to even it out but I know that will probably introduce Contamination.
So I`d suggest just casing it and accepting what you get from the flushes.
Just try not to make the same mistakes next time.

Why didn't you even it out when you added the spawn?

Yeh that was my thinking mickey.
That`s why isuggested he rather just accept what his flush will give and be more than happy.
Next time mistakes won`t be made again.

ya, that's one of the things i didnt think about when i did that, i was just trying to get the lid closed as soon as i could. what about if i were to take some colonized millet and even it out with that, then let it sit 2 days before i case?

I wouldn't worry about that. When you do case, make sure the casing is of even depth across the entire surface. This will of course not cure the hump, but I think having an even casing depth is more important for colonization times. Otherwise, you'll be patching the hell out of the hump area so much, you'll end up with it again anyway... lol

Peace
