Humidity box [I forget the technical term].
    #9850468 - 02/23/09 02:24 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

So I've got this fish tank in my house that nobody's using and it's octogon based prism. The thing stands a little over a foot tall and the octoconal side is about 7 inches wide.

Would this work for a fruiting box?
How could I make it work if so?

Thank you.

Fruiting chamber, is the technical term, you were close at the end there.

Anyhow, yes it can work if you can put holes in it (glass won't do for this) you can make a shotgun type FC.

If not, you can do a poor man's pod style FC... search PMP.

Why does it need holes in it?

Ahaha... excuse my ignorance.

well you need fresh air exchange while fruiting. if you dont have holes then you need to fan many times a day. It can work without holes, you just need to give your fruiting chamber enough oxygen by fanning.

I read something that told me I would need to exchange by fanning every other day, that must've been wrong.

Can I not add an artificial lid with a hole in it?

One hole, only in the lid, will not provide enough. As stated, you would have to fan and mist several times a day to get it to fruit properly.

The reason for holes, like in the 'shotgun' fruiting chamber, is to use a rooms natural current to push fresh air through the chamber.

:O Maybe the glass walls are really actually plastic!

I doubt it very much though.

Holes in the bottom and top would allow some sort of air flow esp for perlite. That's why I was wondering. Glass is not so good for drilling, and I highly recommend against it.

fanning everyother day will not cut it. idealy, you would need to fan 3 or 4 times an hour..but who really does that? thats what the shotgun terrerium is for, although i used to get by by fanning 5 or so times a day without holes in my fruiting chamber.

Holes can be drilled in glass with the right bit and proper speed... I don't remember what the speed is but it's SLOW compared to the average drill... check with your local hardware store they should be able to help you out.

Hmmmm... actually, I have a glass cutting tool. And even if not, I can try to melt it with a torch.
And I should probably learn to count. It's actually hexagonal

How big should these holes me, and where about would they be located?

Here's a picture of one very similar:

Hate to be negative, and I'm all for creativity, but you should buy a plastic tub for $5 and use a regular drill or a hot nail to make the holes.

If you are going to punch holes in it like the Shotgun FC , you will want to space them about 2 inches apart around all seven sides of that aquarium. If I were you though, I would just consider filling it w/ about 3-4 inches of damp perlite in the bottom and manually mist and fan it. It will work, but it will be more work. You will probably also need a lid to help maintain ambient humidity in that after you mist and fan. What you would be doing is way old school, but it would still be effective.

I'd be using Vermiculite though.

Hypothetically?

Every two inches. On every side including top and bottom.

Man that's a LOT of work. How big would the holes be?

No you won't, because if you do it will lead to an epic fail. Verm will not in anyway shape or form provide you with the humidity you need to help those fruit. Have you been visiting the Keeper's website? :hehehe:
