Its not like high school kids don't have access to alcohol anyway. A decent age would be 19, because it would shave 2 years off the current age, and prevent the vast majority of high school seniors to buy for minors. 21 is just far to ridiculous.
In my university college town, the cops enforced a "open container" law vigorously. This meant if you stepped on the sidewalk with a cup you'd instantly get a ticket. Note this college town had a main party strip a mile long, so there were tons of cops. This resulted in people having to finish their drinks before leaving a party, and having to pre-party excessively. This measure, designed to combat drinking, was a huge contributor to excessive drinking.
Also, the frat boys probably didn't call the cops because they didn't want to be busted for hazing, not alcohol. Thanks to all these "matt's law" and other laws, hazing is prohibited, and is thus a felony. If you tell someone they have to drink a gallon of water before they join, that is a felony. However, so is telling the pledges to do 10 pushups!

Regan blackmailed the state that I live to up the drinking age to 21 from 18 by making a law that says states can't get any federal funding for road improvements that have a drinking age less than 21. States will not change their drinking age if it will block them from federal funding. Of course this is completely ridiculous that the federal govt gives money for things such as state roads. Let the states take care of their own, tax less federally and tax more locally. I dunno... thats my opinion!

If someone can fight and die for their country there is no reason they shouldn't be able to get drunk. They let 18 year old kids play the cancer lottery, why not throw in cirrhosis into the picture?
Oh yeah, what was up with the Yoplait comercial?

It took them twenty years to figure all this out? But it probably won't change. BTW, six cups in ten seconds is fucking nuts.

its always been 18 yrs where im from, i started drinking when i was 15.. and now at the age of 23 im an alcoholic. thanks alot! i think we should stop placing pointless limits on alcohol and focus on education and awareness of the dangers of alcohol instead. and replace our mainstream drug with what nature intended..organic buds and shrooms

I agree. If your in the military you should be able to drink. At 18. If you are a normal citizen you can wait til your 21. The fact is... all those guys were idiots at that frat house... has nothing to do with the drinking age. If someone has alcohol poisioning. They vomit for hours.. before they black out. Vomiting for more than 5 minutes is a sign of a problem. just stupid...
Do the math.. 10 gallons divided by 26 or 30 guys.. well most 18 years cant drink more than a pint of liqour let alone 950 mL. ll those guys from the frat house.. should be strung up by a tree and stoned.

i think its an absolutely terrible idea and the drinking age should stay at 21. its still so easy to get booze when youre 18 but are half the people that will be drinking if this law gets passed be responsible enough, HELL NO!

Marijuana should be at 18. As far as 'gateway drugs' go, it is much better than alcohol. When people are young they tend to go overboard, and its far better to push the envelope with pot than with alcohol. You can OD on alcohol, black out too, and mix this in with teenage hormones and it turns ugly. Whats the worst with pot, they smoke everyday? get hungry and fall asleep? pssh.
Once people know how to use pot responsibly, then they can go to alcohol .

Debate on lowering the drinking age? I'd rather see more effort go toward the legalization of pot.

Actually, it's all related. The arguments to lower the drinking age, while unpopular in some circles, make very good sense. It's the same rationale for making pot legal. If the public can see the reasoning here with alcohol, they will see it with marijuana.

I wouldn't completely trust that every individual would see the reasoning with marijuana if they see it with the lower alcohol age limit issue first. There are a lot of sheep out there. I agree it's a great 'stepping stone' so to speak, on the road to pot legalization.

lol, MADD is gay, if you drink and drive when that fucked up you deserve to play russian roulette and lose . It's the person that becomes a victim of a drunk driver that I feel sorry for.
I swear, when listening to this, it sounded like the debate that would get marijuana legal. They made so many good points that would apply to weed.
(Is it realistic?) Well. umm. no, but...
BUT NOTHING, ASSHOLE!!!

There is no need to lower the drinking age. The fact is, you cant end any type of culture (let alone this binge drinking culture) overnight. What might help is alcohol awareness programs for college students like they said, I know I had a mandatory one before I could enroll that helped me and my friends a lot. As much as I hate draconian laws, drunk driving as well as crimes committed while intoxicated need harsher penalties. Like they said, allow its use, abhor is abuse.
EDIT: Lowering the age to 18 or 19 will just lead to more problems earlier on, involving high school seniors legally allowed to buy alcohol.

That way they can either steal it, hide it from their parents, or just have to go to a party and have an irresponsible amount of it because they can't enjoy it legally
