Grey Mycelium, WBS quart jar help

I knocked up these WBS quart jars awhile ago, about 3 weeks, and they've reached 100% colonization. However, the mycelium is grey, not white. It just doesn't look healthy. I injected the jars with a mystery LC I had lying around so I wouldn't be surprised if it has gone bad, but I want to be sure. My gut tells me to toss them, but I'd like a second or third opinion before I make any decisions. Please help! Thanks!

Talimor, that mycelium looks absolutely great. not all mycelia stays perfectly white as it ages, some even turn dark brown or even pink. i have volvariella volvacea that does that as it ages. for my species it is perfectly normal.

Hericium erinaceus (Lions Mane) also does this when it ages. Turns yellow/pink.

Can't hurt to try, eh? If anything you'll learn something from it.

It could be cobweb. I had a jar that looked basically normal, and since I'm color blind, I couldn't really tell the difference, but when I opened the top once it was fully colonized, it was clearly cobweb. Open it up and see what it looks like, you should be able to tell right away.

libertaire, how exactly do I tell? I opened it up today and it doesn't exactly smell "fresh" like other myceliums I've been fortunate enough to produce. What should I be looking for?

If it doesn't smell like fresh mushrooms... Also, FAE and light kill cobweb. H2O2 is supposed to make it fizz although I have never tried.

Cobweb does have a very distinct and strong smell. It's not bad, but if you know what mycelium smells, this smells very different, almost like dust or something, not sure how to describe it.

Its not cobweb IMO. Which would look very grew and hairy.
It looks like mushroom mycelium but very cottony.
Im not sure.
Break the grain up, and see if it recovers. If it doesnt recover it could be mould. Give it a good shake and bash as if you were about to spawn and leave it in the jar for a few days. It should recover and turn white again

Another factor to consider is how long it took to colonize. If it seems like it colonized in an absurdly short amount of time, it's cobweb. My jar of cobweb was fully colonized in a week flat, while the rest of the jars were still barely starting to colonize.

Are your jars getting proper gas exchange. the off smell makes me think not. But it dosent look like cobweb to me. These are cubensis correct?

Cobweb can look pretty normal if you don't know what to look for. Here was mine:

Good point Libertaire but he said they were colonizing for 3 weeks. I'd have to think he would have known much sooner had it been cobweb. Did your (original poster) jars colonize at normal speed or did they go from grain to 90% white very quickly? If they turned really quickly then it could and probably is cobweb. I'm just not convinced that it is yet.

they colonized in about 2.5 - 3 weeks, and they were inoculated from an LC. I popped them open and they do kind of smell like dust... it is hard to explain, but dust is a pretty good way of describing it. I'm going to shake them up again and see what happens. And yes they are cubensis.
As for proper gas exchange, this is how I sealed them. A single layer of tyvek under the lid, then a polyfilled hole in the lid for inoculating, covered by a single coffee filter (mainly for labeling, not security). Does that leave them enough gas exchange?
Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm learning a lot here.

If it doesnt smell fresh mushroomy, i doubt its mushrom mycelium. If it smells like dirt, its usually mould of some form.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I had the same exact problem.
Solution - its the light you are looking at it under. You are using an incandescent light bulb. Get a DAYLIGHT CFL from HD and look at the difference. You should have one of these 'white' lights anyway for fruiting.
