peyote pups?

where do they usually come out of? and i'm not talking about grafted pups that simply explode but naturally where do they pup from?
just any areola? the sides? the bottom? the root?

that i was...
i read somewhere that injury in peyote often leads to pups, not that i plan to injure my single specimen but i was none the less curios.
i really want it to pup already

damaging the aperical meristem will make it pup. but that will stop the main plant from growing entirely and the pups will take over. i doubt that is what you are trying to achieve
you can get a plant hormone called BAP, which forces cacti to pup when spread on the aeroles
i'll be posting some write ups of my experimentation with it in the next few months.

I'll be looking foward to it I've always been curious about this hormone. If it works with accuracy one could possibly "groom" a cactus into quite a beautiful specimen

darn... no i don't want it to stop growing EVER hummm...... i guess the only solution it to sow some seeds and buy some more specimens i could be less sentimental towards
at first i thought "yeah, i'll let it get a little bigger, cut off it's head and reroot it" pheee no fucking way! this guy is keep it's head for life! i wonder if it will out live me

they tend to start think after the 6cm i notice.....but the areole rule is not set in stone! i have some that threw out pups from cuts, but no areole to be found, thats for sure! usually the lower areole though....but caespitosa and grafted plants can be anywhere/everywhere.
can't wait to see you BAP experiments man. be neat to try other chemicals as well. UNA's posts left a lot unanswered, so did their site...i understand why but i wish there were more pics and processes.

6cm seems to be about the average size where they start to throw pups within my collection too. some sooner, some later, of course

hummm... now that's an interesting thought, i've actually done that with my oldest cacti and it took off like crazy after that (i also repotted it into a bigger pot but i had to scrape off a layer of gunk so...) i was actually considering looking if my peyote has become root bound or not, i have no idea if it has enough space in there and anyway i don't know if it will be good to give it more space then that (for now) i wouldn't want it to sit in a wet pot for too long.
so you're saying it's worth to flip it and check out the root mass?
i had a dream tonight that i noticed a pup coming out from my peyote and i was using my dads video camera to take a close up snap shot of the pup so i could share with you guys, but there was lighting problems in the room and i tried opening the shutters and all but that wasn't working... i never got around to take that picture and i'm awake now

i only repot when the crown has outgrown the pot....i tend not to pull them out just to check....if its truly root bound, you can tell from the bottom and top of the pots without pulling anything out. but i also tend not to over pot things like these...so....
cactus dreams? maybe we should start a meeting every month to discuss our dreams of cacti/plants....there must be more of us just unsure where to find help.

i wasn't thinking to pull it out of course, only to flip the pot and look at the whole mass of the soil... it's a little risky but not too bad i assume
for now i don't thinks it's necessary anyway.
i think this was my first ever cactus dream (at least that i remember) and in the dream i actually think there were two buttons (probably mixing with my oldest cactus that's a little similar) i even remember where the pup was forming, i remember noting to my self how unexpected that is because it was on the top like a pimple i thought "wow that's strange, they said it would most likely pup near the base"

By the look of the plant, it should flower quite soon. I'll stick my neck out and say willi, if it is willi you'll have your own seeds soon and you can produce like crazy.

i don't know how soon it would flower but it doesn't seem to be growing any internal tuft... it should however be old enough to flower!!! it's like 9 years old already

9 years, it doesn't surprise me that much, I have some big plants I bought all ready mature, my oldest plants I grew my self from seed are four years old, and still no where near flowering. To me yours does look almost ready to toss some tufts, lol it shouldn't be too long now.

I have seen a nice specimen, that was presumed dead, because the top was taken off and it stalled in growth, then had 7 heads form =)
So you could take off the top, root that and then get a load of new heads, however like previous posters said, the growth of both cuts will greatly slow.

it may well be 9 years old now, just not grown in anywhere near optimal conditions for the best part of its life, so growth was relatively slow.
if it has gone from being completely scabbed like that to being nice and healthy as it is now in a year or so, i think you can see that the plant grows much faster in your climate
