mutants!
    #9831569 - 02/20/09 04:30 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I'm the proud father of four Golden Teacher cakes. Two of the cakes have had single-mushroom flushes, and were then dunked and rolled along with the other two cakes, which were fully colonized but not pinning.

Now three of them are fruiting, but I gotta say two of them are looking, well, queer.

WTF? I've never seen pics like these before. These guys are straight-up fucking weird. As Hank Hill would say, that boy ain't right. I take it as a good sign that they bruise blue, though, and I figure they're just deformed for one reason or another rather than the fruiting body of some invasive contaminant. Has anybody else gotten weirdo mushrooms like this?

And then there's the third...

Daddy's proud.

Should be a good weekend.

The one on the right looks like a cat shat on your cake and the myc just covered it up. LOL

The last pic looks beautiful.

youve got a new strain on your hands

john merricks

the elephant shrooms.

i had a cake that produced a load of wrinkly stemmed wierdos last year, i think that was down to insufficient water content, but youve dunked so search me!

Yeah, I was wondering if maybe it was a genetic oddity and I should concern myself with preserving this lineage.

I don't know, though, my whole grow op has been very seat-of-the-pants (it's my first) and I'm sure this is occurring due to some failure on my part to provide the correct level of nutrients/moisture/heat/something else.

So I take it that u used a MS syringe/LC.
I would watch and ?probably? still eat them, take many pic's, but not reproduce from either of those fetal alcohol syndrome cakes. That other one is were i would be making prints/clones. IMHO

you could clone one the 'merricks' and see if you get the same result.

its odd that youve got one thats going like the clappers tho, if it was something youd done id expect it to effect all your cakes, youll have made them same from the same substrate mix, sterilized them together, used the same spores, same FC.

perhaps you had some mutant spores in the syringe and its just chance that the healthy mycaelium colonized the awesome one and mutant mycaelium colonized the not so awesome ones.

I think that the third one will compensate two “strangers”. Good luck with fourth cake.

Well, when I rolled them in the verm after dunking them, I rolled them all in the same bowl of verm and I noticed not all cakes picked up the verm so well (the healthy one appears to have gotten the most verm, though I don't remember whether I rolled it first or not; interestingly the one that is not fruiting at all actually got the second largest amount of verm stuck to it). Perhaps the wet verm didn't stick so well and these guys just didn't get enough of it.

I'm thinking about dunking and rolling them again but with a separate supply of verm for each.

And yes, I'm astonished at just how picture-perfect the third one came out. Every time I look at it I shit my pants a little bit. I hope it's the first of many.

You don't have a blacklight/UV light in the room, do you?
If you do you might want to check this out, from/about the man himself, PF.

Funnily enough, yes, I do have a big blacklight in here. Go on.

Blacklight/UV light almost wiped a strain off the face of the earth.

So blacklight exposure causes genetic damage leading to albinism? I'm not so sure about that, as the cakes are kept in a different room than the blacklight. I suppose it's possible that I brought the cakes into a possibly blacklit room a few times to share them with my acquaintances, but this exposure would have been very brief. Could such limited (at most) exposure to blacklight cause that type of damage so rapidly and easily?

If indeed the brief exposure to blacklight caused this syndrome, it makes me want to not only toss out my blacklight, but even more to hold onto strain the third... the survivor.

In a way, he introduced a new variable into the evolutionary equation. Resulting in unexpected outcomes. I was just showing that anything used in excess (whether you know your exposing it or not) can cause mutations, deformation, genetic problems, sterility, etc...

OP:
This could be genetic too, a recessive gene that you have no control over. Could have had an outside influence generations before the spores you procured were even formed.

I'll see how the mutant colonies fare, as one of them does seem to have a few "normal" primordia showing up. Either way, I'll be careful not to expose my babies to blacklight in the future. Thanks for the heads-up.

:rofl2:

Just to clarify for anyone that doesn't take the time to read the article, PF had the BL/UV directly on his FC for 24 hours a day through several generations. Having your light on for minimal time and with distance regarding the grow probably won't affect them at all, though anything is possible.

lol, a few minutes from the black light will have little effect on the shrooms.

Good job on that one cake though!
