Senate OKs FBI Net Spying

Senate OKs FBI Net Spying
By Declan McCullagh (declan@wired.com)

12:55 p.m. Sep. 14, 2001 PDT

WASHINGTON -- FBI agents soon may be able to spy on Internet users legally without a court order.

On Thursday evening, two days after the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, the Senate approved the "Combating Terrorism Act of 2001," which enhances police wiretap powers and permits monitoring in more situations.

The measure, proposed by Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Dianne Feinstein (D-California), says any U.S. attorney or state attorney general can order the installation of the FBI's Carnivore surveillance system. Previously, there were stiffer restrictions on Carnivore and other Internet surveillance techniques.

Its bipartisan sponsors argue that such laws are necessary to thwart terrorism. "It is essential that we give our law enforcement authorities every possible tool to search out and bring to justice those individuals who have brought such indiscriminate death into our backyard," Hatch said during the debate on the Senate floor.

Yeah....things on the internet are going to change alot.

The "wild wild west" attitude that the internet has/had will change becuase of the soon to be war waged on terrorism. Its a bad day when people can't even surf the net without big brother watching over them.

But as many of us know, the gov't has always been doing it. Now there is a supposed "reason" to impliment what they already have.

Damn terrorists....gotta screw it up for everyone!

With key loggers encription is pointless because they can record you typing in the pass codes, and this is the sort of thing the FBI commonly use at the moment.

True, about a year ago in Philly, this mobster was on trial and the only way they nabbed him was becuase they illegally put a keystroke recorder on his machine and from that they found out his paraphrase. The case was dismissed:)

I change my paraphrase every 2 weeks.

Another thing is to own 2 computers, one for internet access and one completely cut off from the world. I have an old 200Mhz that I use for important things that doesn't even have a modem in it:)

I think they should let them spy all they wan't, but can't use the information they find against "anything" other than terrist activity. For xample if they go to a court for a search warrant saying they were watching for terrorist activity when they heard of a grow operation and it's location. The court or whatever should say "sorry, but that's does not have anything to do with terrorist activity".

sure, ideally, but the courts work for the gov't wich the FBI works for and they all agree that if drugs arent' fucked with, they wouldn't have the money and power they now have.

Funny thing.... When as Americans, we give up our rights to privacy , freedom of speech etc. during wartime, it should be noted that those rights are always reluctantly returned to the citizens after the wars end. Some are never returned. We should never compromise the few real rights as Americans that we have left.

YES! Drugs are the furthest thing from the govt's mind right now. I wonder if funding for the War On Drugs will be cut. Maybe this will help people see the fruitlessness of the WOD. Maybe not.
