Please Read
It is important to note the difference between venomous and poisonous, which are two commonly confused terms with regards to plant and animal life. Venomous, as stated above, refers to animals who inject venom into their prey or as a self-defense mechanism while the organism is still alive. Poisonous, on the other hand, refers to plants or animals that are harmful when consumed or touched.
Snake venom is produced by glands below the eye and delivered to the victim through tubular or channelled fangs. Snake poisons contain a variety of peptide toxins. Snakes use their venom principally for defence and hunting. Snake bites cause pain, swelling, tissue damage, low blood pressure and convulsions.

Here is some more for you
Venom itself is a poison secreted by animals for either defensive or offensive purposes. Venom originated from digestive enzymes that were originally located in the stomach. Throughout the millions of years it has progressed quite a lot and in some animals has become quite different from it's origin.
In insects venom is used predominantly as a defensive weapon. Wasps, bees and ants use formic acid in their stings to cause a painful burning sensation that will either kill or injure their enemy enough to make them think twice about attacking them again.
Amphibians all use their venom for defense. In amphibians the venom is secreted through glands in the skin to make the animals unpalatable. So as we can see venom is a predominantly defensive adaptation

In these insects and animals the effects are pretty instant.Like said before psilocybin takes a while to effect you. Not saying you are wrong they just seem different to me

But did you read the part where it said it makes them unpalatable, meaning they are not pleasant to eat.. Yes some might get eaten but if the animal eating it is affected it will not continue to eat because of the negative effects, and will stop.. Thus leaving some uneaten mushrooms, which then reproduce to carry on there species..

I'd say the evolution idea is probably key...
It probably started to develop a dangerous, harmful toxin over the course of it's evolution. Just like the Destroying Angel or Death Cap.
However, I think it was never necessary enough in it's survival to continue it's evolution into a serious toxin, thus has basically stuck to bein a hallucinogenic substance.
For example, take humans evolving from apes.... You have us humans, like your Death Caps or Destroying Angel (i.e. Fully Evolved), you have your basic, generic monkeys (i.e. your edible, gourmet, medicinal mushrooms), but somewhere in the middle, you have your chimps and other "above average" apes (i.e., your cubensis, etc.).
Basically, I'm suggesting that it could be an "aborted" evolution, or one that's currently taking place and being developed.
(Okay, now you can flame me for my stupid ideas...)

some dude who jacks off to japanese animation (ie: gets sweaty and huffy over cartoon characters that don't even have real pussies "...huh...huh...omg...i am getting a boner over this cartoon character's absurd hip/waist/tit proportions") is trying to remind himself he exists by putting out some hate and hoping for some reciprocity and then a bunch of people start saying 'fag' a bunch as if it means anything other than derision for a party that isn't even part of the situation ('gays' as nebulous 'them' as 'whipping boy')....blah blah blah.
humor and dicking around and what not is awesome, but this board should be about learning, and feeling like its safe to learn. ignoring trolls seems sage. calling people 'fag' won't hurt anyone's feelings except maybe those of some faggot who is also interested in mycology, and is here for the community. seriously, if you are queer, female, etc...this board must seem like a pretty shitty place.
sorry for the platitude, but this sucks. we're in the cultivation forum for shit's sake.
