if you can and prefer a campfire, by all means, have a campfire.
Makes sense. How long does one of those little stoves last on a full tank 'O' fuel?? 15-20 Minutes??
the one you see in my picture, when filled to just below the fill hole(roughly 2oz) with 90% isopropyl(no need for fancy and expensive fuels like denatured alcohol) it lasts just over 25 mins. so a little bottle of 90%($1 for 16 oz) will last you probably somewhere around 4 hours of straight cooking.
not too shabby eh?

i havent gotten around to making a suimmering ring yet, care to post a picture for us?

I can use isopropyl in mine too, it just doesn't seem to burn as well. Denatured isn't much more expensive.. I get it for like 4.50 a quart online.
Here is said simmer ring and stove.. simmer ring is just the top of a heineken can, fits in there nice and snug

a penny that's why it's called a penny stove.. sits right in the middle over the 4 holes you just pour the fuel on top of the penny.. it fills the indent and spills over into the outer rings and a little goes down the holes you prime it by burning the fuel on the outer ring and as it starts to boil the excess fuel gets sucked in under the penny, it's pretty pro
Instructions.. just need 2 heineken cans and 1 regular one

Ya, many times open fires are banned in state parks for one reason or another. These are a superb replacement for a gas cooker.
I just got back from a trip to enchanted rock and i used this alongside my friend's lightweight propane stove. His did cook the food a minute or so faster, but mine was 60-70 dollars less and much smaller.
And i was wrong, its not just for boiling water. I can get my food real hot, i could simmer stuff and cook brown rice. I'm assembling an improved menu for my next trip.

You can cook pretty much anything you can with with one of those fancy, bulky, heavy expensive backpacking stoves.. except adjust the flame.. but a simmer ring accomplishes pretty much the same thing.
4 oz of fuel you can cook for several hours.. that's like 50 cents worth of fuel.
