I've made one. It worked pretty well. but looks different than yours. Got a link to the method you used to make it?
mine just looks like a really short coke can with a hole in the top and little ones on the side. It doesn't have that extra can around it.
I have not tested it on the trail. That'll be done this spring break.
I hear they aren't good for real cooking. Mainly just boiling some water.

made one many years back, a few years ago I licked into a deal, someone was having a yard sale, they didnt want to pack everythingup and haul it all back home so I ended up with 2 hand crank icecream makers, 3 coleman lanterns, 1 coleman cook stove and a bunch of hand and power tools for $20

I recently put up a thread on home made ultralight packing equipment. Since then I have made about 20 alcohol stoves. They are fun to make and play with.

a well made penny stove performs faster, quieter, and at better elevation than a coleman.

I made a penny stove from a heineken can, it works beautifully, for more than boiling water too.

yeah i was actually reading a post by u the day i built mine, u said u really liked the simmer ring. i was putting off making the simmer ring cause i already fucked up two cans trying to do it, but im gonna give it another go.
i was gonna build a wood stove at first cause wood is so abundant where im hiking, usually. but i came to thinking, as long as i have a way to light it, why do i need to lug around the stove? i can always build something out of rocks/logs if i need to.
i already carry a small magnifying glass, and a 9volt with steel wool incase of emergencies out there, but wood is a good resource as far as fuel goes.

I made the Penny wood stove. It works great but I'll stick with alcohol. Wood stoves can give off sparks that start forest fires. I'm paranoid of having to pay out a couple of million for a fire that my stove started.

can they seek damages if it truly was an accident? i thought they only did that if the fire was intended to be destructive?

Not so. Let's say your car gets a flat (this happened) and before you notice and stop the tire comes off and the sparks from the rim start a fire. You are responsible.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I have a question. Are these stoves really useful?? If you were camping would it not be better sense to just use an open fire with metal stand to cook food / boil water? I guess the bottom line is are these for novelty, or for actual in the field use.

these are meant for backpacking or other situations where a campfire either isnt a timewise option OR an option at all, say youre backpacking through extreme drought conditions and there is a fireban, or its just plain dry and youre worried about starting a fire OR say youre on the run and a fire would give away your position, this is the perfect lightweight alternative. no smoke, no mess, quick setup and cleanup.
if you can and prefer a campfire, by all means, have a campfire.

Makes sense. How long does one of those little stoves last on a full tank 'O' fuel?? 15-20 Minutes??

In my penny stove, 1.5oz of fuel can burn for about 20-30 mins Enough to boil ~8 cups of water for about 5 mintues, from like a shots worth of denatured alcohol. With the simmer ring, about twice that long
