My succulent is being eaten alive
    #9812892 - 02/17/09 07:36 AM (15 years, 1 day ago)

The poor guy was fine yesterday when I bought him but I woke up to see a little black gnat looking bug skittering across the plant. It looks like it ate away some of the skin and part of it dried. What the heck do I do?

You're succulent is probably pretty resilliant to pests the brown area will most likely heal like a scab or just stay like a brown spot expect this sort of thing to happen I've found it's not unusual on my outdoor cacti but I'm really no expert....

Do you see any more of the bugs?
If so, spray the plant down with insecticide, then sprinkle the soil with some DE.

Not that I can see. They've been around before but don't mess with my mushrooms. Seems kind of crazy that a few bugs could do so much damage. Could it have been anything else I've done?

Its hard to say.
There are all types of little flying insects that love nomming on succulent plants. If they dont mess with your mushrooms, then I would assume that they are not fungus gnats or fruit flies, but I could be wrong.

No, it was definately the bugs that caused the blemish.  My cactuses get little spider mite infestations about once a year. It just comes with the territory.

I've never had a problem, I get those gnats all the time I just can not stop them with DE, what do you suggest?

I cant really tell from the pic that anything is wrong.  Are those lithops? If they are, the new plant coming up from the middle actually uses the moisture from the outside plant to feed on, then the outside will dry up and wither away.  You sure its not drying out because of that?

I don't think they're lithops. It looks like Pleiospilos nelii, but yeah, they work the same way.

Bugs haven't attacked again if thats what it was. Maybe it was the replanting, and a bit of water I gave em?
