can you colinize woodchip/bran substrate in qt jars, then crumble and combine them in a large container and allow to recover to form a large block or do you have to create a large block in a pc-able bag from the get go.

1 more question. i read a tek on using other grain flours in place of bran but it was a 4 or 5 year old thread. can i use whole grain rye flour ( because i have it already) or other htan bran added to wood chips for shiitake?

Denger spoke of using Coarse WBS flour as a supplement instead of Bran.

i just got a bunch of wood shavings from a wood mill but there's a lot of pine mixed in. will this work?
i checked out the thread on using wbs in place of bran and there were a lot of negative comments on using it, no actual results though. i also went to a local feed n' seed and they have no bran so i guess the health food store is gonna be my next stop unless i find other substitutes. i hope it's not too expensive. still looking to find out if you can spawn a few qts to a bulk sub to make blocks.

yea that's the first one i read, sounds hopeful but it basically said he was going to try it and not weather it actually worked or not. i'm not too interested in experimentation before i get a few solid growsunder my belt. there's a few bucks left in 'the shroom kitty' so if i can't find a big bag locally it's not too far 1 - 1 1/2hrs to where horses are. RR stated somewhere that bran is used to supplement horse feed and he gets 20 -30 lbs or so for like 10$. i'd like to go kinda big plus i'm looking foward to doing other wood lovers. i'll just make it into a sunday drive for the family if i have to. i still would try it, just not on the first go. i learned my lesson with cubes breaking the rules before i learned them. lol
i'm actually more curious about the first question; can you make a few jars and then spawn to bulk with the sawdust/bran stuff or does it have to be all done at once ( big myco bags )?
thanks for the link though.

Shiitake tolerates softwoods fairly well. If the mix is more then 50% softwood you might have poor yield, but it will work. Yes, you can use whole rye flour. I would recommend mixing in some whole (not ground) WBS to it, perhaps 20% by weight of the flour to add some longer-lasting supplementation.

speak of the devil. just reading one of your threads Mephistophelian steared me to^^^. did wbs flour work with saw dust? if so, how well?
i had the rye flour lying around, glad to know it can go to good use. so it would be like 25parts saw dust, 5 parts rye flour, 1 part wbs then, right? how about colinizing the wbs and spawing it to the sawdust/flour mix, sounds easier and more efficient unless wbs has to stay at that ratio. 1:30 spawning doesen't sound like a good idea.
sorry, just thinking outloud. i really wan't to do this right and i'm anxious because it gets hot fast here. i would like to get some outside then come back inside when the a.c. starts. my house is 100 years old, it's like a big wood tent, so consistant temps. are expensive and a pain.
thanx

Yes, you could just use WBS spawn. Try to keep total grains down to 20%, shiitake's do not like high ratios of supplemental grain products: they grow deformed "topless" fruit.
